IF UCONN wins and we lose

Recommended Posts

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the criteria for bowl eligibility is 6 wins.  We won 6 games, so that means we deserve it if we are chosen.

You are right, for the most part.

The literal definition is more wins than losses in non-exempt games.*

For USF, that would be 6 wins.

However, there are 63 and could be 65 teams out of 119 that fit that definition. That's 54%!!

To the original point:

"IF UCONN wins and we lose, Why shouldn't UCONN get the Car Care Bowl Bid? "

They will.

With a win over UL, they will likely get the bid even if we beat WVU.   You all better cheer on those Cards.

I disagree Brad.

That would circumvent favoritism rules that are set up to avoid having a team that finishes higher in the conference standings. UConn would finish 5th in the conference (3-4) to USF's 2nd (5-2). They cannot take a team that is more than one game ahead of them. With Rutgers signed to be in the Insight, UL to the Gator, WVU to the Sugar, and ND in the BCS at large, USF is the only one left with a record good enough to get that last BE Bowl tie in.

It's in the rules. It would take a serious hose job to have that happen

This is from today's Tribune:

Bulls Nearing First Bowl Berth

Published: Dec 1, 2005

TAMPA - -- No matter the outcome against No. 12 West Virginia, the University of South Florida has clinched its first bowl berth as long as Ohio State receives an at-large BCS berth.

If Ohio State receives an at-large BCS bid, which is almost a certainty, then the Big Ten cannot fulfill its requirement to send a team to the Motor City Bowl.

The Motor City Bowl has a conditional bid with the Big East, but is not required to select a Big East team unless it has seven wins. USF must defeat West Virginia to reach seven wins. However, USF fans shouldn't worry about being left out if the Big Ten can't fill its commitment, Motor City Bowl executive director Ken Hoffman said.

"We will definitely take a Big East team," Hoffman said.

USF (6-4) can still go to the Meineke Car Care Bowl, but that will be determined by Connecticut -- and not USF.

If the Huskies (5-5) upset Louisville, the Meineke Car Care Bowl will select UConn and the Bulls (6-4) would be headed to the Motor City Bowl -- even if USF beats West Virginia.

If UConn loses to Louisville, the Huskies would not be bowl eligible, sending USF to the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

USF likely would face N.C. State or Clemson of the ACC in the Meineke Car Care Bowl (Charlotte, N.C., Dec. 31, 11 a.m.) or the Mid-American champion (Northern Illinois plays Akron tonight in the MAC title game) in the Motor City Bowl (Detroit, Dec. 26, 4 p.m.).

Last year, Connecticut made its first bowl trip to the Motor City Bowl.

"The Motor City will be the bowl that schools cut their [bowl] teeth on," Hoffman said. "That's great to have schools that are bowl hungry.

"South Florida has been receiving a lot of national attention, and just a week ago they were getting BCS notice in only their fifth year in Division I-A. We'd be happy to show South Florida fans some of our northern hospitality."
