USF Women Win Fifth Straight; Take Best Western Classic Title

Tampa, FL (November 27, 2005) – The University of South Florida women’s basketball team improved its record to 5-0 this afternoon with an 83-58 win over Robert Morris University in the championship game of the USF Best Western Roundball Classic.

Jessica Dickson (Ocala, FL) capped off an unbelievable offensive week with her second consecutive 30-point game, netting 32 points on 10-17 from the field and 2-3 from three-point range. In addition, she was 10-11 from the free throw stripe in the win.

For her efforts, Dickson was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

“It was a win and a win without two starters,†said USF head coach Jose Fernandez. “If you had told me at the beginning of the year that we would be without Rachael Sheats (Marietta, GA) and Tristen Webb (Stone Mountain, GA), and that we would be 5-0 – playing Texas-Arlington and Robert Morris – I’d say you were crazy. This game was good for us today. We walked the ball up the floor and controlled tempo. We really played just five or six kids and didn’t even press, so in general I was happy.â€Â

The Bulls jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead just two-and-a-half minutes into the contest and never looked back. USF used a blistering 66.7 percent (10-15) clip shooting in the first 10 minutes of the half while holding the Colonials to a dismal 16.7 percent (2-12) over the same stretch.

The Bulls would increase their lead to as many as 17 points three time in the first stanza, and would take a 45-32 lead into the intermission.

Robert Morris would come out in the second half and tried to establish the tempo, and would eventually cut USF’s lead to six points using an 11-4 run which was capped off by a Psyche Butler free throw with 16:25 left in the game.

The Bulls, however would take over outscoring the Colonials 34-15 from that point on en route to the win.

In addition to Dickson, USF also got double figure scoring efforts from Nalini Miller (Capital Heights, MD), who tallied 15 points, and Jessica Jackson (Roswell, GA) who dropped in 11 points.

Miller also turned in her second double-double of the year grabbing a season high 13 rebounds.

For the game, the Bulls shot 49.2 percent (30-61) from the field, including an impressive 53.8 percent (7-13) from three-point range.

Butler paced the way for Robert Morris with 17 points and DeSheyna Perry added 10 points in a losing effort.

Joining Dickson on the all-tournament was Miller, RMU’s Butler, a Brittnie Hughes of UMBC, and Marquise Hasner of Loyola (IL).

USF will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 2 when it faces North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels are currently ranked No. 7 in the current Associated Press and No. 8 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top 25 polls.

The Bulls will return home for their inaugural BIG EAST Conference game on Wed. Dec. 7 when they face No. 17/17 DePaul at 7 p.m. in the Sun Dome.

USF Post Game Notes

- USF’s 5-0 start is the best five-game start since the 2001-02 season when the Bulls went 7-0 to start the season.

- USF’s win over Robert Morris in the Sun Dome is its eighth straight win on its home floor dating back to last year … In addition the Bulls are 19-2 on their home turf since the beginning of the 2004-05 season and 23-2 since defeating No. 18 TCU, 89-84, in double overtime on Feb. 2, 2004.

- Jessica Dickson’s 32 points marked her fourth 30-point game of her career and her second straight … It was her fourth consecutive game of 20 or more points this season.

- Her point total against Robert Morris was also Dickson’s fourth straight 20-plus point game and the 27th of her career … She has tallied double figures in 58 of 66 games, and 20-plus in 30 of the 58.

- Sharon Cambridge got her first start of the season.

- Rachael Sheats out with a right knee injury (MRI Monday or Tuesday) missed just her second game of her career Sunday … In addition she had her 58-game consecutive games played streak snapped … It was the first game she missed since Dec. 14, 2003 against Florida State.

- With the loss of Rachael Sheats, walk-on Courtney Hunt dressed for the first time in her career and saw three minutes of action … She recorded one assist, one foul, and a turnover.

Someone has to show me how to dress this up to look real nice like the other posts that articles, cause my posts look ugly

Posts like this are completely absurd...  Jose has done a superb job... Mac has done every bit as well as Jose did his first couple seasons here...  you need to give him the time afforded to Jose and see how things work out.
