I disagree about the financial incentive argument.  If you make bowl games a playoff (where the winners move on) EVERYONE (who's a fan) will watch to see who advances.  Thus, each bowl would be significant.

As it is now, most only care about the bowl they're in plus the #1 vs #2 bowl.  The remaining bowls have no significance.

Making them a playoff would bring more casual viewrs and thus more TV $$$$$$$.

i like the bowl system now, but how about if they have a playoff for, lets says, the top 4 teams in the AP/Coaches Poll.  That way the National champ will be decided out of the top4 and there will still be large BCS Bowl Games

I'm not an expert on this but just a thought..

Problem is, we all have seen how little research the polls do when voting.

Why should there need to be a financial motive

Because college football is a business.

NFL football is a business. And they seem to rake in plenty of money off a playoff system.

They also play playoff games in team's cities up to the Super Bowl ..... That wouldn't happen in a college playoff if you stick with the bowl games. TV would have to kick in for lost bowl revenue if you go that way ..... which still would probably be doable. The ratings for meaningful bowl games should be a whole lot better than what they are now ....

Most schools are in the red when it comes to financing the football team.

It's an interesting argument about making a playoff out of the existing bowls, I know we had a big discussion on here a while back regarding this. Most of the pundits in college football seem to agree that a playoff won't happen anytime soon since the present system is too entrenched, and somebody would lose out with a playoff system.
