Quotes from Florida A&M Football Coach • Sept. 6, 2005

RUBIN CARTER

Saturday’s High Points (vs. Delaware State: L, 21-17)“The high points for us in Saturday’s game (vs. Delaware State), were the running of Rashard Pompey (139 yards, 18 carries, 1 TD) and the defense…. I thought the defense played well, showed a lot of intensity and poise, especially with the good field position Delaware State had early in the game (4 of their first 6 possessions inside the FAMU 25)….

The Quarterback Situation

“I thought Chris Owens (redshirt freshman from Thousand Oaks, Calif.) did some good things coming off the bench Saturday (in place of starter Albert Chester, II, Jacksonville)… He threw well to his second and third receivers and hit the vertical routes downfield…. Chris is ready to go and start Saturday…. Chester is still a little dinged and bruised and he’ll be evaluated day-to-day…. And we’re working to get Josh (Driscoll, senior from Fort Smith, Ark.) ready for Saturday….

The Offensive Line

“Our offensive line is young and inexperienced (lost center senior Garth McIntosh to injury early in game; junior left tackle Dan Parrish is being held out) in spots… Going with a freshman center (Gaizka Crowley, Tallahassee) meant we had to go with a guy who had some trouble making proper calls on blocking (FAMU gave up eight sacks to DelState)…..

On South Florida

“USF is a very athletic team on both sides of the ball, especially their defensive front seven….. They are a team with great speed and are well-disciplined in all phases…. They are just a good, solid football team, who played Penn State extremely well…. They got behind early, but made a very strong push near the end…. Their quarterback is very mobile; their wide receivers have speed and good height and their offensive line is very good at what they do, which means that we will have to be very solid on defense….

Keys To FAMU’s Success Against USF

“We will have to be efficient and mistake-free on offense… Not conservative though…. We need better field position  for our offense than last week…. Our defense is keeping us in the game and we’ll need that Saturday…. This (FAMU) is a very hungry team, hungry to win…. We’ll be working hard this week to repair the mistakes we made last week…. We plan to be very aggressive on both sides of the ball…. Our tempo has to be high… We have to pay attention to detail…. Proper execution of our game plan will be the key…

Growing Pains of New Staff, New Team“It has been a challenge trying to unify the team (players) and staff in such a short time (Six weeks)… Normally, you have six months, including a spring practice and fall session, but that didn't happen this time.... We want to be a team that doesn’t beat ourselves, but a team that is exciting… Two or three plays can make all the difference in a game…. We’re focusing on improving our play every week…. I am most concerned about seeing improvement in our performance as a team each day….”

What a true quote from the FAMU coach "We want to be a team that doesn’t beat ourselves, but a team that is exciting… Two or three plays can make all the difference in a game."

If you do beat yourself, and it's not exciting, you're not trying very hard.

They are a team with great speed and are well-disciplined in all phases….

disciplined in all phases except being disciplined, but we did do better on the penalty front than we usually do, at least it seemed we weren't shooting ourselves in the foot as often by penalties, just dropped passes.
