are looking to split their choices with one getting the Big12- #4 or#5 or BE #2+ND every two years.

With this the BE #2 or ND will head for Gator or Sun Bowl for the next four years.

ND can only be taken once by each bowl

In the Gator Bowl it would face #2 or #3 ACC team

In the Sun Bowl it would face Pac Ten's #3 or #4

Depending if those leagues get two teams in BCS Bowls

Big East worked out a manageable bowl deal

Jack Bogaczyk

Daily Mail Sports Editor

A midweek buffet:

FILE THIS under a half a loaf is better than none -- no, really, it's better than that.

The Big East Conference will settle for two appearances in four years with the Gator Bowl, starting with the 2006 season. The Big 12 is getting the other two Gator spots in a four-year agreement (Jan. 1, 2007-10 bowls), to play an ACC team.

So, where does Big East No. 2 or Notre Dame go in those other two years? The Sun Bowl, in El Paso, Texas, will alternate between a Big 12 team (Nos. 5 or 6) and a Big East runner-up or the Fighting Irish, with a $1.575 million payout.

Under the deal, the Gator, bumping its per-team payout from $1.65 million to $2 million, could take Notre Dame over a Big East team in one of those two years. While the Gator will get Big East No. 2, it will take Big 12 No. 3, after the Bowl Championship Series and Cotton Bowl make selections.

The Sun is giving up Big Ten No. 5 for this two-headed conference arrangement, with Pacific 10 No. 3 as the opponent.

The Big East comes out OK after getting brutalized in the bowl marketplace. Commissioner Mike Tranghese was struggling to find a top-tier bowl interested, due to mediocre TV ratings and the fact that the current Big East membership has no track record of traveling well to New Year's Day bowls, other than West Virginia.

Tranghese and Big 12 Commissioner Kevin Weiberg crafted a plan on this Gator/Sun split, and for a time it appeared the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, Fla., would be one of the sites, but as elsewhere, the Big East proved a tough sell.

With the Gator (NBC) and Sun (CBS) the Big East retains similar exposure (and slightly more revenue) to the current Gator deal. Those networks will promote the bowl on December NFL telecasts, too.

The Big East keeps a New Year's Day presence when it goes Gator. The Sun is played Dec. 31, and has a lot of cache because of its "only CBS bowl" situation, the neighboring attraction of Mexico, a Dec. 31 afternoon date and its history -- only the Rose, Orange and Sugar have longer histories.

There's another plus, too. Because the Sun Bowl seats only 51,270 and has sizable local support, the Sun will require a Big East ticket sale of only 5,000 (the Gator is 12,750).

In other words, the quality of destination for Big East football just below the BCS turned out much better than it might have six months ago.

I hate bowl tie-ins.

The Citrus Bowl (and many others) has gotten boring now that they choose #2 from Big Ten and SEC.  Usually the same 3 teams from each conference come down to play.  I wish they could mix it up sometime.

Not a bad deal. A deal like this with the Liberty Bowl as the secondary game would have been perfect. The Sun Bowl is a quality non-NYD game, against a quality opponent (Pac 10 #3 if I recall).

But El Paso's not a logical destination for a Big East school, nor a place you'd take the wife and kiddies. "Neighboring attraction of Mexico"? Yeah, and the Motor City Bowl has the neighboring attraction of Detroit.

You have to like the fact that the BE#2 will be playing a top ACC team in the Gator or a top PacTen team in the Sun Bowl

I have been across the border. I'd rather pay $6.25 for a Corona and not fear for my life.

Yes, definitely. Our top team will go to the BCS and our #2 team will face a ranked ACC or Pac Ten team in a Dec 31 or Jan 1 bowl game. Beyond that we've got the Phoenix and Charlotte games, which are also vs Pac 10 and ACC.

NBE teams will have opportunities. We need to take advantage of them by winning our share of games and traveling our share of fans.
