No. 22/19 Bulls Host Saint Francis U Wednesday

TAMPA, DEC. 13, 2016 – The University of South Florida women’s basketball team has a chance to match its best start in program history when it hosts Saint Francis U Wednesday. The Bulls return to the Sun Dome after two games on the road.

USF (7-0) is fresh off a 78-59 win at Arkansas State and holds steady at No. 22 in the AP poll. The Bulls’ RPI is currently 13 in NCAA Division I, and are one of 12 remaining undefeated teams in the country. The list includes No. 1 UConn, No. 4 Maryland, No. 5 Mississippi State, No. 14 West Virginia, No. 15 Colorado, and No. 24 Virginia Tech.

The Bulls are 31-4 in the Sun Dome over the past three seasons.

Promotions

Wednesday is USF’s annual Teddy Bear Toss. Fans are encouraged to bring a teddy bear to donate or can purchase one at Gate A. How it works:

Step One: Bring a teddy bear to the USF Women's Basketball game or purchase one at the game for $5 (cash only) at the marketing table near Gate A.

Step Two: Register your bear at the marketing table at Gate A

Step Three: At halftime, prizes will be placed all over the floor of the Sun Dome

Step Four: If you hit a prize, it's yours! Meet back at the marketing table at Gate A to claim your prize

Step Five: The USF Women's Basketball team will donate your teddy bear to foster children for the holidays

Fans are also invited to participate in Associate Head Coach Jeff Osterman’s Giving Tree. Any unwrapped toys can be dropped off by the Angel Tree in the Sun Dome.

The teddy bears and toys will be donated to local foster children in the Tampa Bay area thanks to the Hillsborough County Foster Angels Inc.

The Opponent

USF and the Red Flash will meet for the second time in program history and with USF winning the only meeting. The Bulls defeated SFU 86-74 in Tampa on Dec. 31, 2009.

Wednesday is SFU’s (3-4) second game of a seven-game road swing. The Red Flash defeated Coastal Carolina 70-59 Monday night to snap a two-game losing streak. Saint Francis put three players in double figures led by 18 from Maya Wynn. Jessica Kovatch added 17 points and Ace Harrison chipped in 16 points and 17 rebounds.

Notables

  • The Bulls are 7-0 for the first time since the 2012-13 season, the third time under head coach Jose Fernandez. The program’s longest undefeated streak is 8-0, which it has reached twice, once in 1976-77 and again in 2012-13.
  • In her 36th game as a Bull, Laksa reached 500 career points, joining Jessica Dickson, Wanda Guyton and Angie Snyder as the fastest players in program history to reach the mark. Dickson reached 500 points her freshman season in 29 games, while it took Guyton 32 games. Laksa tied Snyder with 36 games, both reaching 500 points as sophomores.
  • The Bulls have not allowed more than 65 points in a game this season.
  • USF’s 16 three-pointers against FIU are the most three-pointers of any team in the American Athletic Conference this season. The top mark in conference history is 18 set by UConn at UC Davis on Nov. 14, 2014. The 16 three-pointers list second in The American history.
  • USF is the only team in NCAA Division I with nine international players on its roster.

It is putting the cart way before the horse, but how awesome of a match up would it be for 14-0 USF v. 14-0 UCONN vying for their 90th consecutive January 10th? By then, we would likely be ranked in the top 8 and UCONN would still be #1. It is a bit of a long-shot, but that would be awesome.

Don't short us..it's not a "long-shot" at all. Look at the schedule. It's very likely this team will still be undefeated in the first match up vs UCONN.

You are correct.

She broke the pinkyfinger on her shooting hand.  Supposedly, she has two chips. She had it taped up during the game. She played sparingly and seemed to shoot OK, but we didn't need her, since we were way ahead.

In fact, USF set a new all-time scoring record of 129!

FINAL | USF downs Saint Francis U 129-80 and improve to 8-0, matching the best start in program history. #United
