IMHO, a big part of the reason why Pitt and 'Cuse have been able to break away is due to their basketball successes, more than football.

One that bugs me is Clemson.  Not that they have "passed us by", but we were better than them in 2010.  They have since climbed to #4 in the country and we have plummeted into oblivion.

I am sure the Cuse and Pitt fans would chuckle at the notion that they "passed by" USF. They would ask when USF passed them in the first place.  We had a good record against one of them but no one would say historically USF was ahead.

They have a lot more money and fans.  In one given year this can be overcome with the proverbial "lightning in a bottle" or a down year by the bigger program.  For the long term success of a program, lots of fans and lots of money seem to be what is needed and USF has neither.

That said, keep in mind that they were big time before in the SWC along with Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor, Arkansas, Houston, and SMU so it is not a stretch that they moved up.

Clemson is an SEC team that isn't in the SEC. And they have historically had great recruiting classes, they finally got the right combination of coaches to put it together (though I still hate them).

 

TCU would be a "passed us" team. Other than that, there aren't any teams that have truly passed us (yet).

i respect all reasons and excuses given by usf's apologists

 

but i simply dont buy them

 

had usf's football program progressed over the last 5 years and we actually won something  we would have been invited to join a bigger conference
