Hurricane Mutiny Posted September 19, 2013 Group: Member Topic Count: 7 Content Count: 276 Reputation: 2 Days Won: 0 Joined: 11/25/2009 Share Posted September 19, 2013 i am amazed at the athletic prowess of such a small school It helps to be located in such a huge geographic area that produces so much great talent. Also, don't forget, the University of Florida was very scared of the geographic might of SoFla back in the 1950s-1970s, they resisted legislative efforts to put a state university in that area. At one point, UM was even considering affiliating with the state as a "State university" and we were blocked by UF. FIU boosters will try to tell you that UM similarly tried to block them from becoming a state school, but it was more the UF guys. There were a few UM guys who were perturbed about UF blocking us, and then the state doing an end-run and building a "new" state school in Miami, but those Gators really know how to protect their turf. That's why FIU had to be "International" and FAU had to be "Atlantic" instead of, say, UF-Miami or UF-Palm Beach. Now we just need to get an indoor practice facility (lots of lightning storms in SoFla, and it is apparently now on the Athletic Department's radar) and an on-campus stadium (still, for the most part, a dream, though we are secretly preparing for it with parking garages). I wonder if that explains how USF and UCF got incorporated at that time while FIU and FAU came into existence later. UCF was (unfortunately isn't this year) was a laughing stock for decades in football, and they had no legendary coaches to bail them out.

And it's in a great area of Miami. The UF crowd has always been low-class when it comes to other schools in the state.

But go back and look at the talent level. We were putting guys like Ted Hendricks (Hialeah), George Mira, Jim Otto, OJ Anderson, Chuck Foreman, and others into the league even when our coaching was terrible. We were sub-.500 for the 1970s. The key with most of our coaches is that they weren't the "top guys" according to most, they were below-the-radar and hungry. Schnellenberger was known locally for his work with the Dolphins, but he was struggling to be considered as HC material. JJ was on the rise, but was coming off of a 7-5 season for OK State when we hired him. Drunk Dennis was probably the only guy who had a fantastic HC resume at the time we hired him. Butch was, like, our fifth choice to be head coach. We missed on a few guys before the players convinced the administration to hire Coker. And most people wanted someone with a higher profile than Golden. But, yes, the coaching has been great too.
