USF Football Notebook: Bulls will have different look under Taggart

TAMPA -- Fans got their first glimpse of the University of South Florida football team under new head coach Willie Taggart on Saturday as the Bulls opened their practice fields to fans for a 21/2-hour session.

"Getting the fans involved is a good opportunity, especially with us being new as a staff," Taggart said. "This football team is going to look a little different than the last few years, so we thought it was a great opportunity to come out here and get a glimpse of what this team is going to be about."

Under ex-coach Skip Holtz, all practices were closed, except those in Vero Beach during fall training camp. The rest of this spring's 12 practices also are closed, meaning the next time fans get to see the team is at the April 13 spring game at Raymond James Stadium.

Saturday also marked the Bulls' first spring practice in pads, rather than just shorts and helmets.

Though fans were watching, Taggart felt no pressure to alter the practice agenda to feature drills more exciting than the team would otherwise do.

"We've got work to do," he said. "It's not about putting on a show for anybody else. We've got a lot of work to do so we can be the team we want to be. I told our players, 'We've got fans out here, but we're practicing. We're out here to get better and work on our craft.' "

A new defense

Expect to see a more aggressive defense when the Bulls hit the field in the fall under new defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan, according to S Mark Joyce.

Rest of Story

I am sooo happy that the defense is getting back to its attacking ways of the past. I really hated the "please don't attack us" defense. I've been looking for that defense that attack fsu a few years back.
