Did you notice how much USF outcoached Houston in that game??? A true college basketball fan would have noticed the outstanding coaching job by McCullum and staff against Houston. It had to be one of the best coaching jobs that I have seen at USF. The reason I say this is because USF has faced and failed against Houston twice this season, so major adjustments were made. McCullum planned to use the zone defenses at first which were working because USF got that 12 to 14 pt lead early. Next thing you know, Houston had some good coaching too in which they started to use patience and soon took the lead. Then the best coaching move happened midway in the second half IMO. McCullum switched to a man to man defense which really got USF back into the game because Houston didnt have the answer to the adjustment on defense. What a great cal that basically helped keep USF's  season alive. If that does not show you that McCullun can coach then I dont think anything will. McCullum just needs his players and more time to really get you hooked.  WTG!!! BULLS!!!!

Actually, the timing of the switch was excellent because he didn't change TOO SOON, which would have allowed a better adjustment by Penders down the stretch.

Man, you detractors will not give the coach any credit. Did you see the setup on the final inbounds play for Houston? Did you hear the announcer talk about what a great strategic setup it was and then Houston turned it over. He sounded more like a Bulls fan and CRM fan than some on this board. You must at least admit that he has the team peaking at the right time. It's nice to see us play ball at the end of the year. We used to be able to stop watching before Feb and not miss a thing.

BullDoug, Don't mind 83, he's just irritated about NHL lockout/cancellation and complaining about basketball is his way to blow off steam ;)

sad, but true....

anyways, I wasnt trying to dampen the party but everyone is so giddy after two wins and ready to appoint CRM as king.  UH figured out the zone, all they had to do was set a high screen to isolate that side of the court and open up a lot of stuff.  They started doing this and draining three's on us like there was no tomorrow.  IF we had stuck with the zone any longer the game would have been out of reach.

and if we had switched earlier, then Houston would have had time to figure out the M2M... we also switch zones to matchup zone from the 2-3.  There were lots of small adjustments, then the one big one in the 2nd half that gave us the push back into the game.  It worked out perfectly.

of course all season long we have been hearing the naysayers pointing out the lack of winning exactly these types of games as proof that the coach is going to be a flop. I think this gives others the right to throw these wins out there to show what he is doing right and how the team is improving. I haven't yet seen anyone proclaim him king, just some opinions that he is and will do a great job as coach.

That 2-2-1 zone that started getting exploited with the 3 ball was eerily similiar to what used to happen with the vaunted 1-3-1.

Yup, the difference is we didn't stick with it the entire game.  It was used for a stretch, then scrapped.
