May, Calhoun, Gay nab weekly awards

By **** Vitale

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

BEST of the WEEK | March 7, 2005

Awards based on games from Monday through Sunday

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sean May, North Carolina

Junior Sean May, the big man for the Tar Heels, had one of the top inside performances of the season on Sunday. He scored 26 points and grabbed 24 rebounds (12 offensive) as the Tar Heels won the ACC regular-season title with a come-from-behind win over Duke.

That came after a solid 32-point, 10-rebound effort in a victory over Florida State. May has been one of the premier big men in America this season.

COACH OF THE WEEK: Jim Calhoun, Connecticut

Calhoun earned career win No. 700 vs. Georgetown (83-64) and added No. 701 over Syracuse (88-70). The Huskies are peaking at the right time -- they've won six straight games and nine of the past 10. Connecticut, the defending national champion, is capable of making another run in the NCAA Tournament.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Oklahoma

The Sooners earned the top seed in the Big 12 tournament. Coach Kelvin Sampson did an outstanding job this season, as shown in a couple of big road wins last week. Oklahoma beat Texas (74-58) and Texas Tech (74-54). Oklahoma is a dangerous team capable of making noise in the postseason.

DIAPER DANDY OF THE WEEK: Rudy Gay, Connecticut

Huskies freshman forward Rudy Gay averaged 18 points per game in wins over Georgetown and Syracuse.

SHOCK OF THE WEEK: South Florida over Charlotte

The Bulls entered their Senior Night 4-11 in Conference USA play. Charlotte came in 12-3 in league play. But South Florida scored an 85-73 upset. It was the Bulls' first win over a ranked opponent since knocking off Texas in 2000.

At least someone is giving us some props for our big win.  Dickie V has a soft spot for us since he resides in the Sarasota area.

**** V also told Seth G not to come coach at USF.  I don't think **** gives a hoot about USF.

When did we knock off texas in 2000?  I thought our last upset of a ranked opponent was over Tulane in 1992.

Texas was ranked 25 in the coaches poll, unranked in the AP poll.

We beat texas 2 years in a row... once at Texas, then again at the dome in the dodge shootout.
