Breakdown: USF verbal Tampa Bay commits

By TEAM BCP– July 31, 2012 3:54 pm

If “It all starts upfront,†the South Florida Bulls are putting the bricks together to build a massive wall for the future. To date, South Florida has 5 Tampa Bay verbal commits. That’s five local prospect who have pledged their services prior to the their senior season. While other schools are picking up good skills guys, The Bulls see the value in attracting quality, under recruited lineman.

Bruce Hector, Cameron Ruff, Conner Rafferty, Robbie Garcia and Mitchell Wright are at the top of the BCP rankings for their respective position. They may not be national prospects, but they are awesome football players that will help to continue building the Bulls football program.

Below is a brief breakdown of each USF Tampa Bay verbal commit and who I like and why.

1 Bruce Hector, Robinson, 2013 OL/DL

He is my favorite of the bunch. Came on late in the recruiting game, but has been a beast even before transferring to Robinson prior to his junior year. We ranked Hector as the #1 interior offensive lineman. However, he will more than likely be projected as a DT. He is super physical and can run. 6-3/265lbs. He has great feet. Great motor. Good upper body strength.

2 Cameron Ruff, Jesuit 2013 OT

The Jesuit prospect is the most seasoned of the bunch. Ruff will solidify the edge on the right side of the offensive line for the Tigers this season. He is also capable of playing on the defensive side of the ball where he dominated during 11-on-11 play. Ruff is a legitimate BCS prospect standing just shy of 6-feet and 5-inches pushing 280 pounds. His future is on the offensive line where he dominates defensive ends and blitzing backers. Aggressive and nasty!

3 Mitchell Wright, Plant, 2013 DE

The name doesn’t set the recruiting world on fire. But, it is known locally. Wright is a long, lean DE with great feet and a high motor. He will be very productive for the Bulls as I see him stepping right in his freshman year and making an impact on every special team and possibly seeing a little of bit of defensive time in certain pass rush situations. Wright is a technique sound player, but with a bloodhound nose for the ball. He makes plays. No matter what year a player is in college; if he makes plays, you got to play him. Mitchell will be that kind of player for USF.

4 Conner Rafferty, Robinson 2013 OL

A steal for South Florida. I mean, a steal like…someone left a winning lottery ticket by the coffee machine in Circle K…type of steal. Rafferty dominated the BCP E7 Training Camp this summer. Lockdown every defensive end. Great size, standing taller than 6-feet 4-inches. The big Knight has a bright future. Overall, he is a monster that will learn fast and is possibly the most technique sound of the offensive linemen.

5 Robby Garcia, Jesuit 2013 OG

At one point it seemed like Garcia was set on playing defensive end, but it is clear his ceiling is higher playing offensive guard. At 6-foot 4-inches Garcia weighs in around 250 pounds and is athletic. He runs well, uses his hands well and has great feet and hips. Lining up beside Ruff will give the Tigers an impressive guard, tackle combination to run behind. Garcia will be a project for the USF staff. He is one of those players who will have to fit just right. He has so much upside, that if molded the right way, USF will get a beast in a few seasons.

Apparently, that was wrritten before BCP had a chance to speak to Garcia, who said in another article that he "was offered as a 'defensive lineman,' but he saw action on both side of the ball last season for Jesuit, where, among other statistics, he recorded eight sacks and six pancake blocks."

Mama, I think your point about the players we are bringing in is valid. USF is gaining ground. Now if we could only get out of this conference and into the Big 12
