Is it a time thing, from Point A to Point B? Similar to rowing or dragon boat racing? Collegiate sailing places double-handed (2 person - skipper and crew) dinghys sailing simultaneously against eachother on a triangular course or variant there of. All boats start at the same time and place and finish at the same place. It is essentially a tactical sport where awareness and ability to take advantage of wind shifts gives you the edge. Of course it also helps most of the time if you're skipper/crew combo are light (much like a jockey on a horse). Each school has two teams (A and B ). Your finishing place is your score and lowest aggregate score wins. Sailing has always been dominated by schools from the Northeast.
