USF baseball player accused of hit-run that injured Tampa officer

By Greg Auman, Times Staff Writer

TAMPA - A senior reliever for the University of South Florida Bulls baseball team was arrested early Sunday after a hit-and-run crash injured a police officer.

Kevin Quackenbush, who led the Bulls with 25 appearances last season, was arrested near USF's campus and charged with a felony count of leaving the scene of an accident with injury.

According to police reports, Officer David Michelson was driving his marked cruiser north on McKinley Street near Adventure Island at 2:59 a.m. when Quackenbush, driving a 2002 Dodge Ram, violated his right of way, hitting the cruiser.

The cruiser flipped three times and landed in a ditch, according to police reports. The officer suffered a cut to his head.

Quackenbush, 21, was found at his apartment at 3:30 a.m., about a half-hour after the crash. According to police, he admitted he was driving but didn't stop because he "was scared."

Baseball coach Lelo Prado released a statement Sunday afternoon saying that Quackenbush had been "immediately and indefinitely suspended from all team activities."

Quackenbush went 2-5 last season for USF with a 4.28 earned-run average and four saves. The Jesuit graduate is expected to contribute out of the bullpen again for the Bulls, who open their 2011 season in February. A USF spokesman declined to comment when notified of the arrest Sunday.

Quackenbush was released from a Hillsborough County jail on Sunday morning after posting $2,000 bail.

That is the end of that career.  Hope the officer is OK.
