Scrimmage ends with back-to-back sacks by Claude Davis. Just 1 TD all day, but freshman QB Jamius Gunsby looked sharp: 11-for-17 for 169 yds

Defense, Gunsby highlight first scrimmage

VERO BEACH -- It was a rough day for quarterback B.J. Daniels and most of USF's offense, with just one touchdown in about 150 snaps as the Bulls held their first scrimmage before about 400 fans at the Vero Beach Sports Village.

"Right now we're a long way from being productive as an offensive football team," coach Skip Holtz said. "With the penalties and dropped passes and missing open receivers and inconsistencies in the passing game, it's very difficult to get anything into rhythm. We've got a lot of work to do right now, but I think the attitude is good and they're willing."

Daniels, running the No. 1 offense and coming back from offseason surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, was off the mark early, hitting just one of his first 12 passes for 13 yards. He finished 7-for-22 for 70 yards, with a 20-yard run on his first play of the scrimmage.

"A little rusty -- there's a lot of things I can definitely improve on to help the team," said Daniels, who rushed for a team-high 40 yards, with plays whistled dead when he was touched by a defender. "Defense usually comes along a little faster than offense, but we're getting better."

In the battle for the No. 2 quarterback job, freshman Jamius Gunsby looked sharp, going 12-for-17 for 169 yards, including a 58-yard bomb to receiver Faron Hornes that set up the only touchdown, a 4-yard run by redshirt freshman Bradley Battles.

"He handled himself very well -- he's athletic, did some good things with his feet, stood in the pocket and made some nice throws," Holtz said. "He's had some passion, some energy about him. I thought he did a good job running the football team. ... He can keep some things alive with his running ability."

Aside from the long pass to Hornes, the defense didn't allow any plays longer than 26 yards. The Bulls defense had three interceptions by safeties -- senior Mistral Raymond, redshirt freshman Jacquez Jenkins and true freshman Reshard Cliett -- all against walk-on freshman Bobby Eveld, who finished 2-for-15 for 21 yards.

"I'm very pleased with the way the defense played as a whole," Raymond said. "Anytime you can come out here and go 150 snaps and give up one touchdown, you've got to love that ratio."

Defensive coordinator Mark Snyder said he was pleased with the production of his defense, but disappointed by the lack of fire he saw in the intrasquad scrimmage.

"Defense is all about emotion and enthusiasm, and we were a little lacking today," Snyder said.

Practice Report

Saturday was practice No. 11 for the Bulls, but the first time the men hit the field for a full scrimmage.

Nearly 500 fans came out to the Vero Beach Sports Village to catch the action. Keep an eye on GoUSFBulls.com this evening for a feature about the fans who got the first peek at the 2010 Bulls.

At kickoff at 11 a.m., the scrimmage was scheduled for 100 plays, but coach extended the event to 150, giving more reps to the first string guys.

The offense struggled to get into a rhythm, scoring only one touchdown. a RFr. Bradley Battles 4-yard run set up by a 58-yard pass from Fr. Jamius Gunsby to Sr. Faron Hornes.

The defense made three picks, including a grab by Sr. Mystral Raymond in the first series of the day, along with one each from RFr. JaQuez Jenkins and Fr. Reshard Cliett.

The players are relaxing until this evening, when the team will participate in the second day of the Bulls Olympics.

Practice Report

Following Saturday's 152-play scrimmage, the USF football returned to the fields of the Vero Beach Sports Village and were greeted with a cool Sunday afternoon practice session.

With a stress to correct some of the mental mistakes from the previous day's scrimmage, the Bulls practiced for just over two hours in shorts and helmets in what Coach Skip Holtz labeled "the dog days of camp."

Not uncommon following the first scrimmage of fall camp, Holtz said that it is obvious that the defensive unit was much further ahead than the offense but both have a ways to go.

Coach Holtz was happy to report that the Bulls came away from the scrimmage relatively healthy from the lengthy scrimmage.

"We pushed this team yesterday," said Holtz. "152 plays is a lot especially in that heat yesterday but we were able to do so, thanks to the fact that we didn't have any guys banged up."

The Bulls will have team meetings this evening and will wrap up the much-anticipated Bulls Olympics with the final three events; a tennis competition, the egg toss and a home run derby.

Following the final events tonight, it will be all business for the remainder of camp as the Bulls resume two-a-days tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.

Tomorrow afternoon Coach Holtz will release an updated depth chart. Stay tuned to GoUSFBulls.com and follow us on twitter at @USFFootball.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
