wait...arent some band members on scholarship?

do they get paid too?

so we pay the band but not the athletes?

not to go in a completely different discussion on this thread...but can someone confirm if the members of the band who receive a scholarship get paid?

The Band does get paid.  $250 dollars a semester for first year, more for 2nd year and 3rd year members, and if you're a section leader you get 100 more dollars added on.

That it what is was my first year in '05-06.  In '06-07 it was $100 for rookies and $500 for vets and $600 for "leadership" if you can call them that.  They upped the vet stipend for retention.

Basketball band was a band you could only be in if you played in HOT for football and auditioned for.  Your stipend was I think an additional $350 a semester for that.  On top of that, there was show band, another audition band that you had to march in HOT for football to be in and you stipend was an additional $750

Yes, they recieve a stipend (as of last I knew).  It is like a scholarship in that the money is directly deposited into account at USF for tuition and fees.  However, you get the money at the end of the semester and if you have already paid up, they cut a check for the overage.

I have different feelings about the stipend.  Some of the most respectable Marching Bands I know of do NOT pay for the Football season, you have to want to be there, not be there solely for the cash.  But there is an incentive to play for the basketball games ($20-25 a game).  There is good in the stipend in that it attracts members however, they are also whining about being under-funded when there is at least $125k going to stipends.

I marched in another college band before the HOT.  We were not paid, we were not fed before each game, but we had a great time and traveled in class (police escort for every bus ride).  We wanted to be there for pride in our school not for what they could have "paid."

Nice post... you nailed alot of it right there. The truth is that alot of HOT members are infact just there for the stipend... there's no real pride and it shows not only here but at the football games as well.

8va... I agree, the new director has alot of work to do and some credibility to gain back...

I know that they got paid a small stipend when my daughter marched, however they were also REQUIRED to take Marching Band as a class and pay tuition.  The stipend really just paid for the class.  They practiced 3 days during the week, had to attend camp in the summer, gave up their entire day on Gamedays, sat in the hot sun in long sleeve uniforms, played in the stands constantly (never a 3rd quarter break), and stayed late after the game (win or lose).

I would say they earned that stipend.

That's how it was when I was in the band, and it was only $300 regardless of what class, or if you were a part of leadership or not. (I even think in my first year in 2000 it was only $250.)

When I was in the Show Band, it was a completely separate thing from the marching and basketball bands. There were a maximum of 10 gigs over the course of the semester, and the Athletic Bands (specifically) were paid for those events, not the university. We did everything from played small gigs on campus, we played different store openings and things like to going up to Tally and playing at the state capitol for "USF Day," to even marching and playing at an Indian wedding while a groom rode into the wedding on a white horse. (Really, we did that at Innisbrook)

There is a lot of work to do with that program; retention has always seemed to be an issue but it seemed like Robinson recruited heavily enough where they were still getting 100-150 new kids a year.

That's a **** shame. I attended a mid-major and played in the pep band, and I currently work at another, in both cases with no marching band to draw from, and we always did significantly better numbers than that, even with abysmal b-ball squads.

Losing Dr. Rob was the start of it all... They should have kept him.

I think there is an easy way to fix the pep-band turnout. Make it a requirement that in your first year in HOT you must also play in the pep band

Good lord.  Can you imagine 200+ band members showing up for the pep band?  Seating logistics aside, that would indimidate the visting team when the entire band played "The Bull"

My understanding is a lot of things happened administratively that caused it.

Yes it was a lot of work.  But, where I come from, marching band is not about the  money you can earn.  It is about taking pride in representing your school and creating an awesome atmosphere at the games and having an awesome experience while doing so... that in itself should have been payment enough.

Yes you had to pay tuition, however, that was only for 1 credit hour (about $125) for a non-major so when all is said and done you do end up making money if you were a vet as in my second year.

As we grow as a school, I would like to see the stipend lessened and eventually eliminated.  There are better things that $125k (for football season only) could pay for that the athletic bands could use.
