Lake Gibson Gets Another Chance

By EDUARDO A. ENCINA eencina@tampatrib.com

LAKELAND - There's no state championship football trophy in the main trophy cabinet at Lake Gibson High.

The only reminder of the Braves' run to the Class 4A state final is a modestly sized team picture that hangs near the entrance to the team room. As players and coaches wind through the corridor, they see it every day. It reminds them of how close they came - and also how far they have to go.

``Another one will go right beside it,'' Lake Gibson coach Keith DeMyer explained.

``And hopefully it will say something other than state runner-up.''

Lake Gibson finds itself with another chance to win a Class 4A state championship today when the Braves (13-1) face defending state champ Armwood (12-1, 13-0 on the field) tonight at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville - the same site where Armwood ended Lake Gibson's title bid last season, 29-21. Lake Gibson doesn't see the game as a rematch, but as more of another opportunity to place another team photo on the wall.

``Our kids are excited,'' DeMyer said, ``not so much because we have the opportunity to play Armwood, but because we have the opportunity to play in a state championship game. But our kids know about Armwood, and playing someone who is close and you're familiar with is exciting.

``That program, over the past four or five years, has become one of the best teams in the state,'' DeMyer said of Armwood. ``We have a long way to go. We don't have the huge linemen that they do. We don't have the skill position players. The best thing we can do is try to emulate what they've done.''

Both teams had to rally in last week's semifinal round. Top-ranked Armwood used a trick play to score a late touchdown and then converted a 2- point conversion to beat No. 2 ranked Miami Booker T. Washington 36-35. Lake Gibson needed a 20-yard field goal with 12 seconds remaining to beat Pensacola 30-29.

``I'm not so sure people thought we were going to beat Pensacola,'' DeMyer said. ``I really don't think anybody thought we'd be here. We were a second thought to a lot of people.''

DeMyer said that few expected the Braves to return to the final. Lake Gibson returns just three offensive and five defensive players who started in last year's championship game. Of Lake Gibson's 60 players, playing in a state championship game will be new to about 40, DeMyer said.

But Lake Gibson still has its top offensive weapon, senior quarterback and three-year starter Matt Grothe. Grothe, who was named the Class 4A state player of the year this week, is a multidimensional quarterback who has accumulated 3,661 total yards, 48 touchdowns and leads an offense that averages more than 36 points a game.

Lake Gibson's leading receiver, Roger Frazier (56 catches, 938 yards, 12 touchdowns), is the Braves' only returning offensive skill player. But junior tailback Isaac Harris (1,458 rushing yards, 19 touchdowns) gives Lake Gibson formidable balance on offense.

``Grothe is the X-factor,'' Armwood coach Sean Callahan said when asked which Lake Gibson player worries him the most. ``He knows how to compete and he's a proven winner.''

Lake Gibson is the last team to beat Armwood on the field, more than two years and 28 games ago. The Braves defeated the Hawks 17-14 on Nov. 22, 2002 in the Class 4A- Region 3 semifinals.

``I can't wait until Thursday,'' Grothe said. ``Everyone's been saying that the state championship game was played last Friday. I definitely don't think that anyone's giving us a chance.

``I think that's good. Let people think that. I think it will be different this time.''

Hawks' Eyes Will Be Focused On Lake Gibson QB

Published: Dec 9, 2004

LAKELAND - Stopping Lake Gibson's offense begins and ends with halting senior quarterback Matt Grothe.

Grothe, a third-year starter, was named the Class 4A state player of the year this week. But Grothe, also a finalist for Florida's Mr. Football, would rather end his high school career a winner by beating Armwood in tonight's Class 4A championship game in Gainesville.

``We were the last team to beat them, so we have that going for us,'' said Grothe, who was a sophomore in Lake Gibson's 17-14 win against Armwood two years ago. ``Being my senior year and all, I'm looking forward to beating them.''

Grothe, who has committed to the University of South Florida, has the passing and running ability to excel in Lake Gibson's balanced offense. He threw for 2,510 yards and 30 touchdowns this season, completing nearly 62 percent of his passes. Grothe also rushed for 1,051 yards and 18 TDs, averaging 7.7 yards per carry.

If last week was any indication, Armwood will have its hands full with Grothe. Last week, the Hawks struggled to contain Booker T. Washington's dual-threat quarterback, Alwan Lee, who threw for 302 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 157 yards and another score in a 36-35 loss. Eduardo A. Encina
