The 2012 hype is just bunk. It is the end of the 13th b'ak'tun (long count) and the start of the 14th b'ak'tun. It's like how 1999 turned into 2000. Since the y2k wild predictions didn't work out, the conspiracy writers needed a new date and 2012 gave them a dozen years to sell books. After 2012, some new date will come out and people will write more books.
