Any truth to the suggestion that you don't need a passport if you drive across the Canadian/U.S. border as opposed to flying directly into Canada?  I had a friend tell me you can still cross via land w/o passport and I am too lazy to look it up at this point since there is only a 37% chance I am going.

But if it is true, it may help others.

You'll need a passport book or a passport card.  The card is only good for sea and air travel while the passport book is good for all.

From the US Travel Site:

As of June 1, 2009 all U.S. citizens returning from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean via land or sea borders must provide a US Passport Card or US Passport. Previously, individuals crossing land or sea borders in the United States could show a drivers license and birth certificate; however, after June 1, 2009 only government approved documentation is accepted.

If you are going to drive into canada you can get a passport card instead of passport is cheaper and you can use it for cruises to caribbean but not for international flyying. Is a cheaper option.
