Nationally Ranked Guard Verbally Commits To USF

Published: Oct 8, 2004

TAMPA - Sarasota Riverview senior guard Shantia Grace, rated as the state's top player by one recruiting service, verbally committed to the South Florida women's program.

Also ranked as the nation's 14th-best guard, Grace would be the highest-rated recruit to sign with the Bulls. Grace chose USF over Kansas, Georgia Tech, Florida and Virginia Tech.

She averaged 21.4 points last season and has earned first- team Class 6A all-state honors as a junior and sophomore.

``She's the real deal,'' said Dan Olson, of All-Star Girls Report, which ranks Grace as the nation's 66th-best player and 14th-best guard.

FloridaHoops.com ranks Grace, a Street & Smith honorable mention All-American in 2003, as the state's top senior recruit. Grace is USF's second commitment in a week, joining Roswell (Ga.) High point guard Jessica Jackson.

WOW! The women's team is gonna look real good the next couple of years

No offense, but I think we said that three years ago after successive top recruiting classes.  It is clear there is a significant piece missing.

The Women's program has gotten better the last two years it may not show in the record because Coach Fernandez has increased the difficulty of the schedule. Last year they made the NIT, so the program has been improving but if you remember the record before he took over and the conditions, expecting a one year turnaround was expecting too much.

This team will continue to improve.

Uhh, Bulliever, they went to their first ever post season visit last year.  Their record last year was the 2nd best women's basketball record EVER at USF.  We had a freshman all-american playing, and she's returning.  As well as we get back sensational JUCO player Rae Rae Sayles.  Sayles was the leading scorer on the Bulls starting last season until she had a season ending injury in the fifth game.  With her and Dickson manning the guard/forward position it will be probably the most lethal scoring combination in the entire C-USA.

If we can get some decent rebounding and shot blocking this team should build on last year's success and make successive post season appearances.  Having Dickson, and Sayles for two more years should build a lasting foundation for Coach Fernandez, possibly one that could push us into that top 25 level.
