I’m hearing that a multi-team deal involving Jason Bay and the Florida Marlins is in the “final stages.†This could involve the previously in-place dealings involving Manny Ramirez as reported by our own John Perrotto. Joe Frisaro of MLB.com thinks that Bay could end up in Boston, Jeremy Hermida in Pittsburgh, and prospects flying every which way. My sources agree, though I will update as details become clearer.

If this happens then andrew freidman just made the worst non-move in team history.  They can't hit and nothing is getting done about it.

If that happens, it would explain why the team has 0 focus right now... 4 errors tonight.

If the sox trade Manny to Florida, Tampa bay is a lock for the playoffs.

So it benefits the Rays if it happens

The rays aren't hitting and haven't been hitting in a long time.  How do they think rocco will be the savior here.  Bay has proven himself and would probably be the bat to take them to the playoffs.  Why are the rays so afraid of winning it this year, are they holding out for next year?  All these other contenders are making trades for the playoff push.  Even the Angels, who are the best team right now, is trying to make themselves better by getting texeira.  I don't get what the rays are afraid of.  They have GREAT pitching here and a lot of talent in the minors.  They can sacrifice one or two of those guys to get the one thing this year's team needs.

We Have A Deal But …

by Will Carroll

The Commissioner’s Office has been informed of a deal involving the Pirates, Red Sox, and Marlins. The Commissioner has to sign off on any deal involving cash considerations of more than a million dollars, and there was clearly going to be cash involved in any deal involving these teams. There’s also some formality about Manny Ramirez waiving his 10-and-5 rights, and no-trade clause, and I’ll admit not understanding the technicalities.

So here’s what Pee Wee Herman would call the “big butâ€Â: the teams, I am told, have not agreed on the specific prospects to be included in the deal. It’s expected that in addition to the principals, the Red Sox would get John Grabow and give up two prospects, while the Marlins would get one prospect and give up two. There’s still a lot of haggling but my scribbling notes make it look like the structure of the deal is:

Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (Red Sox), and cash (likely covering Ramirez’s remaining salary)

Pirates get Jeremy Hermida and three prospects (two Marlins, one Red Sox)

Red Sox get Jason Bay and John Grabow

There is still potential for this to fall apart over the prospects, but things appear closer now than ever before.

well if that trade goes through then the Pirates got GREAT value for Bay.

Hermidia is a player that could be just as good as Bay straight up in one or two more years.  and im sure the prospects included are top tier guys.  Mike Stanton is one of the players that the marlins will be giving up to the Pirates as well (he was the #2 pick last year after Price) and it looks like the Pirates will also get Jed Lowrie from the Red Sox.

as for the Marlins...it turns a good power team into a great power team but it also turns a bad defensive team into a terrible defensive team.

plus good luck putting up with Manny's ******** and i imagine it will be especially bad due to the heat and lack of fan support.  Manny will get bored out there in LF and start building sandcastles or something.

however.....this deal is NOT final yet.  there is also a rumor about Jason Bay heading to St Louis.  but at time point is seems very likely that Jason Bay will NOT come to the Rays.  and its not even a bad move for the rays to not get him.  obviously the only way Jason Bay comes to Tampa is if David Price goes to Pittsburg (not going to happen.)

so you can ***** and moan all you want about the Rays front office but if someone is willing to overpay then thats business.

looks like they will let Rocco come up and platoon with Heinske/Gross.  We will still probably get a guy off of waivers when the rosters expand.

Not true about price.  They were asking for some of the other pitching prospects like niemann, davis, or mcgee.  friedman must feel confident that the team will last with scoring 1-4 runs a game.

Several baseball reporters were saying that including the pittsburgh newspaper.  Where did you see that they were asking for price?
