USF's well endowed

To the tune of $388MM as of FY2007.  Our endowment grew by almost $60MM in the last year.

An endowment captures a lot of things, but it isn't something liquid that you can spend each year, it is an investment base.  In fact, only about 5% of a university endowment is spent each year, with the rest of any profits reinvested so that it can benefit future years.  Of that 5% that is spent, much of it goes to pay for certain items that were earmarked by the endowing entity, such as paying the salary of a professorship that was endowed by a donor.  Much of the rest is used to pay for university provided scholarships.

By the way, I received a scholarship paid for out of the endowment when I attended USF...
