Let’s wait and see before trashing new-look Big East

THURSDAY IS July 1, which is officially the day that Miami and Virginia Tech bolt the Big East for the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Thursday is also the day I have a colonoscopy scheduled.

It would, naturally, be easy to tie the two together, but I’ll let you come up with your own “stick this up your ...’’ quip. Sorry, no cheap laughs here.

Of course, the same can’t be said for one Steven Godfrey, who writes for a newspaper called The Daily Mississipian and took it upon himself to cheap-shot West Virginia and the Big East in a column last week. Hey, it’s an easy target, right? And really now, how often do folks in Mississippi get the chance to take pot shots at West Virginia?

Pass that one up and it could be a looong time before the opportunity arises again.

Godfrey’s passion on this particular day was the Big East’s (in general, and West Virginia’s in particular) free pass into this year’s Bowl Championship Series, even on the heels of the departure of Miami and Virginia Tech. He blames it all on the system that refuses to buckle under to the bowls and do the right thing  i.e., institute a playoff:

This year’s best example? The couch-burning hill folk of West Virginia.

If you’ve picked up one of the many preseason football guides from companies like Lindy’s or Athlon, you might notice the Mountaineers are a Top 15 preseason pick in most publications, and Athlon even has them as high as No. 5. Make no mistake, the Mountaineers aren’t this year’s Auburn (a 2003 preseason national title favorite that turned bust), but they’re also not Top 5 material either. Still, they’re almost a lock to play in either the Fiesta or Sugar Bowl come January.

What gives?

Money, silly.
