Lake Howell's Rodriguez honored as all-star MVP

Buddy Collings | Sentinel Staff Writer

Posted March 13, 2007

Lake Howell point guard Joey Rodriguez posted a triple-double and was the Most Valuable Player in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association North-South boys basketball game.

The North team -- which included Rodriguez, Jordan Bolton of Winter Park, Roderick Bombard of Edgewater and Marcell Williams of Ocoee -- lost to the South 138-134 in overtime at Florida Southern College last weekend. But Rodriguez had 16 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists and was chosen as the MVP by the FACA.

Rodriguez, a 5-foot-11 senior, has signed with Virginia Commonwealth.

"He'll do well at VCU just because of his demeanor and passion for the game," said Milton Coach Tim Short, who was head coach for the North team. "What a great kid."

Milton's Adam Allen, a 6-7 forward, led all scorers with 25 points.

Guards Dominique Jones (USF) of Lake Wales and Fred Brown (Kansas State) of Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer led the South with 23 points each.

5' 11" with 13 rebounds?  :o

Can Jones back out of his letter since Mac is gone?

Jones can ask for a release but USF does not have to grant it.

I imagine we'll find out more once a new coach is hired.  There may or may not be a mutual fit with he and the new coach.

Hopefully Jones can rebound as well as Rodriguez.  We could use some guard rebounding to help out our one man wrecking crew on the boards.

The score of 138 to 134 says a lot about the game....guards jacking 3 after 3.  That causes for a lot a long rebounds.

Joey Rodriguez is a solid player and a very tough kid but 13 rebounds is an abnormality.

Guest BasketBull.

There's plenty of Florida, enough talent to take us to the NCAA. We just need someone who can keep these kids home and coach well.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
