Sagarin: USF won’t win again

With the University of South Florida nearing the halfway mark of the Big East season and hoping to qualify for the Big East Tournament, I thought it would be interesting to see how the rest of the Bulls’ season projects out. Based on Jeff Sagarin’s computer rankings, which includes a 4.31 bonus for the home team, the news isn’t good. The Bulls won’t be headed to New York for the Big East Tournament. In fact, Sagarin’s ratings predict they won’t win another game.

I don’t agree with Sagarin’s projections, but here they are. The final conference standings based on Sagarin’s rankings and if - and this is a huge if - there are no upsets along the way. Records in (parenthesis) are current records through Wednesday followed by projected records.

1. Georgetown (4-2) 13-3

1. Notre Dame (4-3) 13-3

3. Pittsburgh (6-1) 12-4

4. Marquette (5-2) 11-5

4. West Virginia (4-3) 11-5

4. Connecticut (2-4) 11-5

7. Louisville (4-2) 9-7

7. Villanova (3-3) 9-7

9. Providence (3-3) 8-8

10. Syracuse (4-2) 7-9

10. DePaul (3-4) 7-9

12. St. John’s (3-4) 6-10

13. Seton Hall (3-4) 5-11

14. Cincinnati (1-4) 3-13

15. South Florida (2-5) 2-14

16. Rutgers (1-6) 1-15

Randy and Sam, you’re dead on about the non-conference schedule and the quality of teams USF has defeated. McCullum recently said, though, he knows they’re going to have to beat somebody that they’re not supposed to beat on paper. The upcoming homes games against Marquette and Notre Dame are a couple of opportunities to post an impressive win against a ranked opponent and get in serious contention to make the Big East Tournament. Before the season, McCullum told me he thought USF could win at least six Big East games and that’s what it would be enough to make the tourney. That means, they’ll have to finish 4-7. Stay tuned.

This program is a joke. We need to get rid of CRM. The guy is out of his league. We beat a Rutgers team that shot under 25%. We can’t even compete with the big boys.

The teams we have beaten have a combined 74-134 record.

teams we have beaten

Buffalo 9-10 1-5 (MAC)

S.C State 6-12 4-4 (MEAC)

FIU 8-11 3-6 (Sun Belt)

Stetson 7-13 3-6 (A-Sun)

Winston-Salem 3-19 N/A

ECU 5-13 0-5 (CUSA)

Norfolk State 5-12 5-2 (MEAC)

Wake Forest 9-10 1-6 (ACC)

B-CC 4-13 2-6 (MEAC)

Cincy 10-9 1-4 (BE)

Rutgers 8-12 1-6 (BE)

USF has played one of the worst schedules in America and beat two of the worst teams the Big East has ever seen. The Wake win means nothing because they are awful. The Bulls need a change. Get rid of McCullum and get someone in here that can generate some excitement.

Congrats to Bulls on rock solid victory.  Winning by 22 pts should give Bulls much confidence going forward.

Kudos on the 3 pt. shooting and ft%. Neither number was pectacular but solid.  Hitting 3’s at 35% is the same as hitting 2’s at 52-53%.

Credit must be given to the Bulls for beating Rutgers and not just criticised for losing to supposedly better clubs.

Bulls can beat Marquette, they just have to believe.  They now know that they can lambaste another Big East team and they have 100% more Big East wins than last year.  Looking forward to leapfrogging Cincy and moving up Sagarin system.

Bozeman needs to show the early season form. I assume that it is a confidence issue.  Also, look for Granberry to keep getting stronger.

No, they aren't, because you posted your own comments, and it is the same stupid crap that you've posted every day for the past 18 months...

poor rmc

No, I feel bad for our student athletes.  They bust their a$$es out there and all they get for it is to put up with sheer ignorance from fans that yell at the team and coach during the game and have to deal with anonymous message board jerkoffs that bash them incessantly.

they knew when they signed on with rmc that they werent going to win many games

Sagarin can't take into account the all mighty "due factor" (as in this team is due for a win or loss, etc) and "sports betting owns your ass", so it's clearly flawed, just like the polls.
