Riverview Pitcher Ferrera Picks USF

The Tampa Tribune

Published: Jan 18, 2007

TAMPA - Riverview left-handed pitcher Anthony Ferrera, rated the nation's No. 8 junior prospect by Baseball America, verbally committed to the University of South Florida.

Riverview coach Bill Leiby said Ferrera was being recruited by numerous programs.

"Who else wanted him besides USF?" Leiby said. "Honestly, I guess everybody in the country. The biggest thing was he wanted to stay close to home and he really likes the coaches at USF, especially [pitching coach] Lazer [Collazo]."

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Ferrera had a 2.35 ERA as a sophomore last season at Riverview. Leiby said Ferrera's potential is why he is so highly recruited.

"The ceiling is there," Leiby said. "He throws from the left side, throws in the low 90s and he has a live arm. There's room for him to grow and mature. He'll get a lot better."

Sure hope we can keep recruits like this...I'm sure he will be a high draft choice and will take some sweet talking to get him to turn the $$ down.

BigShoop...you should.  I know that Lelo was trying to get some sort of beer garden or something like that set up for the games.  Either way the team will have a lot more excitement than the past few years.

From the things that I've heard, the beer garden is a real possibility.  I'll be making more baseball games than hoops games that is for sure.
