Bulls Take Series Versus Blazers With Sunday Win

Bulls Victorious, 8-3, In Final Game of Weekend Series; Win Series 2-Games-To-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (May 16, 2004) – Jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and never looking back, the University of South Florida baseball team (31-21, 12-14 C-USA) defeated the UAB Blazers (25-26, 11-15 C-USA), 8-3, on Sunday, May 16 at Young Memorial Stadium. Junior Kyle Schmidt earned his eighth win of the season, pitching six solid innings versus the Blazers to lead USF to the weekend series win versus UAB (2-games-to-1).

Schmidt, who retired the first nine batters he faced, allowed two runs on five hits while striking out five in six innings of action. Schmidt held UAB hitless through the first four innings before recording three in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Chase Lirette earned his second save of the season, allowing one run on five hits in three innings of relief for Schmidt.

Senior Mike Macaluso went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Macaluso registered his second home run of the season with a blast over the fence in left-center field in the top of the second. Shortstop Myron Leslie hit 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored versus the Blazers. Sophomore Brian Baisley scored a run and registered an RBI, going 2-for-3 on the afternoon.

USF took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. RBI singles by Bryan Hierlmeier and Jeff Baisley and a sacrifice fly by Devin Ivany gave the Bulls the early lead. Macaluso, who scored a run in the top of the first, blasted his second home run of the season to give USF a 4-0 lead in the top of the second. USF added three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 7-0 lead. Jeremy Bellotti drove in USF’s eighth run with an RBI single to right field in the top of the fifth. UAB scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 8-2. A solo shot by UAB designated hitter Nathan McCorkle in the bottom of the eighth cut USF’s lead to 8-3.

The series win was the first for USF in the last five Conference USA series.

The Bulls will next host the Louisville Cardinals in a three-game weekend series beginning on Thursday, May 20. Game time is at 7 p.m.

USF needs to take one game from Louisville to clinch a berth in the C-USA tourney.

If USF can sweep Louisville and win at least two games in the tourney then I think they have a decent chance to get an NCAA bid.

At the start of the week USF was ranked #54 RPI. They beat Stetson RPI #95 and took two out of three from UAB RPI #120, so USF will probably be ranked at around #50 before playing Louisville who is ranked #150.

If we can achieve a final RPI #45 then we'll have a decent shot at getting a bid.
