Final Stats

Bulls Victorious In Program’s 2000th Game All-Time

TAMPA, Fla. (May 11, 2004) – Scoring nine runs in the bottom of the second inning put the game out of reach as the University of South Florida baseball team (29-20, 10-13 C-USA)defeated the Stetson Hatters (30-20, 18-9 Atlantic Sun), 13-3 on Tuesday, May 11 at Red McEwen Field to sweep the season series with the team from DeLand. All nine starters for USF recorded at least one hit on the night, as the Bulls tallied 20 hits in the program’s 2000th game all-time.

“It was just one of those games where we did a good job of swinging the bat,†said Head Coach Eddie Cardieri. “Kyle Schmidt pitched good and that’s something we really need. It was a good game of baseball and I hope it can carry over into the league. That’s where we have to make a move now.

Senior Myron Leslie went 4-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored versus the Hatters. The Bulls’ shortstop recorded his team-leading 21st double. Second baseman Mike Macaluso scored two runs and drove in three, hitting 3-for-4 on the night.

Starting pitcher Kyle Schmidt recorded his seventh win of the season, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out two.

Registering four hits (three for extra bases) in the bottom of the first, USF took a 2-0 lead. A double by Bryan Hierlmeier to left-center field drove in Myron Leslie and Mike Macaluso. The Bulls added nine runs on nine hits in the bottom of the second to take an 11-0 lead. Stetson cut into USF’s lead, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth. A sacrifice fly by Macaluso made the score 12-3 in the bottom of the sixth. An RBI single by Ivany scored Hierlmeier from second base in the bottom of the seventh to give USF a 13-3 lead.

With the win, USF swept Stetson, winning all four meeting with the Hatters in 2004. For the second time this season, the Bulls registered 20 hits versus Stetson (4/20 – 10-8 win in 14 innings).

The Bulls will next travel to Birmingham, Ala. to face the UAB Blazers in a three-game series beginning on Friday, May 14. Game time is at 7 p.m. (CDT)
