I would like to see blitizing in more 3rd down situations...

does anyone know how effective we are on 3rd and longs?

Not very effective for the season...can't comment on today, would need to check the game log first.  I don't think we were as bad today as we have been before.

The Tar Heels converted only 4 of 14 third downs.  BOLD indicates 3rd and 10 or more of which they converted none.

1st quarter

3rd and 6 - pass complete for first down

3rd and 10 - pass incomplete (punt)

3rd and 5- rush for first down

3rd and 24 - pass incomplete (punt)

2nd quarter

3rd and 21 - interception

3rd and 1 - rush for first down

3rd and 9 - pass incomplete (punt)

3rd and 10 - pass incomplete (punt-fake)

3rd and 19 - rush for 13 (FG)

3rd quarter

3rd and 13 - pass incomplete (punt)

3rd and 7 - sack for loss (FG)

3rd and 7 - pass complete for first down

4th quarter

3rd and 18 - pass incomplete (punt)

3rd and 27 - pass incomplete (punt)

Nicholas had a sack today.  Last I remember, he plays LB.  So that would be a blitz.

Not necessarily.  I don't know what they tell our LB's to do (nor would I criticize it, because technical and positional scheming to fit our D is just WEEEEEEEEEE bit above my level...if it wasn't i'd coach), but sometimes if a backer is given a man coverage assignment, and his guy stays in to block, he goes in.  He could also spy the QB (not a bad idea vs the UNC guy) or jump one of those inside routes that he believes is coming (I've seen Derrick Brooks do this for the Bucs, it was a few years ago and he was manned on a running back, but picked off a WR slant iirc).

Anyway, 5 sacks isn't exactly piss poor.  We did OK this game.  I'd have liked to see less big plays given up, but it's hard to argue with a 17 point road win.  Remember, every win counts.

wow, kansas is obviously better than UNC, heh.  but I think the D has gotten better too, can't argue with those stats.
