Grothe Says He Will Play Against UNC

Published: Oct 12, 2006

TAMPA - University of South Florida freshman starting QB Matt Grothe returned to practice Wednesday, but he still isn't 100 percent, Coach Jim Leavitt said.

Grothe suffered turf toe and sprained ligaments on the top of his right foot in the second quarter of last week's win against Connecticut. Grothe wore a protective boot Monday and Tuesday and did not practice either day. However, Grothe said Tuesday he would play at UNC.

During Wednesday's practice, senior Pat Julmiste, who started the season opener against McNeese State before being replaced by Grothe, worked with the first team "for the most part," Leavitt said.

Turf Toe could affect him all year.  It really ruined Rubin's last year.  Not good at all.

Grothe back at practice for USF

By Times Staff

Published October 12, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TAMPA - USF quarterback Matt Grothe returned to practice Wednesday after missing two days with a boot on his right foot. During a win against Connecticut on Saturday, the redshirt freshman injured his foot. Team doctors told Grothe he sprained foot ligaments.

"He looked real good today," coach Jim Leavitt said. "He's not all the way back, but he has two (more) days. He's still tender, so he didn't go all the way."

Leavitt said backup quarterbacks Pat Julmiste and Grant Gregory ran most of the first team plays Wednesday and also said if Grothe reinjures his foot, Julmiste will start.

Returner lightly working: Receiver Ean Randolph, who injured his hip in Saturday's game, also practiced, but did not have a full practice. Leavitt said Randolph, who is seventh in the nation in punt returns, is "tender."

I am also tired of everyone ripping on Pat.  Is he as good as Grothe? no.  but still he is a leader on this team and a very capable QB.

Good one.

Actually, that is pretty funny ... one guy beating a whole university.
