Eddie Cardieri should have made Doug Woolard fire him.

Uh, when someone doesn't renew a contract that has no time left on it that's like firing them.  What's the difference?  Do you like engaging in semantical arguments?  

He simply gave Cardieri the option to step down gracefully by allowing him to announce a resignation instead of an embarrassing firing.  He probably told him his contract was not going to be renewed (which is basically firing him) and gave him 24 hours to either announce a resignation or force DW to announce his contract wasn't be renewed (FIRED).  I think you've been watching to much of the tv show "The Apprentice."
