I met him when I worked at Boca Ciega HS where he coached a powerhouse girl's team that dominated Pinellas County.  I saw this yesterday but didn't post it since I was waiting for more information.  Like you said, there isn't much information. Kind of odd.  I thought for sure this would help him land a college head coaching job soon.  Hopefully it's nothing serious.

USF Not Keeping Elifson

By BRETT McMURPHY bmcmurphy@tampatrib.com

Published: May 5, 2006

TAMPA - University of South Florida associate women's basketball coach Harry Elifson, who played a big role in signing the best player in program history, will not return after his contract was not renewed by Coach Jose Fernandez on Thursday.

Elifson, 43, had been at USF the past six seasons.

"Since I've been at USF, we've gone from four wins to the NCAA Tournament," Elifson said. "I - and I don't like to use the word I - recruited a lot of players that were here. To say I'll miss the kids is an understatement."

Fernandez refused to comment. "The head coach wants to go in a different direction," USF assistant AD Barry Clements said. "That's his call."

Elifson came to USF in 2000 after winning two state titles in 11 seasons at Boca Ciega.

"I'm definitely going to miss Coach E. He was the one that recruited me," said junior Jessica Dickson, who earned honorable mention All-America honors this season. "In high school I always looked in the stands and saw him in his vest.

"He was so persistent. He's what helped draw me here."

Incoming recruit Stephanie Sarosi, of Titusville Astronaut, was shocked by the news.

"I don't know what to say," Sarosi said. "He was the one that got me to USF."

With Elifson, who was Fernandez's recruiting coordinator from 2002-05, USF signed three top-40 recruiting classes. Last season's NCAA Tournament berth was the first in program history.

Elifson said he wasn't given a reason for his termination.

Very strange, we fire all the good coaches and keep all the crappy ones.

Maybe it ws because he sat in the stands wearing a vest...

Don't know...

As I recall, he had an offer last year to take over the St. Leo program.

Something so abrupt is odd.  While Elifson did not receive a reason; and Clements spoke on behalf of Fernie, I sure hope that someone in the AD office got a good reason for such action...I am sure someone did, the media simply doesn't know yet.

Peculiar.

He sat in the stands wearing a vest?! I think you are mistaking him for his twin brother?
