Guest S.  Bien

Chi Chi was the Hills High County POY, and made 1st team all-state.  She was very dominant this year, and a good snag.  Can't find anything on Phillips.

This is an Official USF release from the early signing period but Phillips was not mentioned then:

USF Women’s Basketball Inks Two During Early Signing Period

Tampa, FL (November 12, 2003) – USF head women’s basketball coach Jose Fernandez announced that the Bulls have signed two players during the November early signing period. Forwards Chi Chi Okpaleke (Tampa, FL/Tampa Bay Tech) and Nicole Munneke (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial HS) signed and returned their National Letters of Intent today, the first day of the week long signing period.

Okpaleke, the first Tampa Bay area player to sign with the Bulls since Iris Fleming (Plant City, FL/Plant City HS) inked with the “Green and Gold†in 1994, comes to USF after averaging a Hillsborough County high 20.2 points per game along with 8.7 rebounds per contest as a junior. She helped Tampa Bay Tech to a 23-4 record and an appearance in the state regional semifinals where the Titans lost to Bradenton Southeast 58-43. For her efforts during the 2002-03 campaign Okpaleke was tabbed the Hillsborough County Player of the Year by the Tampa Tribune.

As a sophomore Okpaleke netted 18 points per contest while earning second team All-County honors by the Tribune.

Okpaleke not only excels on the hardwood but off it as well. The 5-11 forward has aspirations of becoming a neonatologist and eventually plans on studying medicine at USF. She finished her junior year at Tech with a 4.4 grade point average.

“Any time you can sign the Hillsborough County Player of the Year, I think it’s great for the university and the community,†said Fernandez. “It’s the first area player that I’ve had since I’ve been here and I think that she can step right in and help us down the road as we head into the BIG EAST (2005-06). I’m just excited because she is simply just a good student athlete.â€Â

Munneke averaged 13 points per game and seven rebounds per outing as a junior at Centennial High School in Blaine, MN.

Following the 2002-03 season Munneke was named All-North Suburban Conference – for the second consecutive year – and was tabbed a second team All-Metro selection. This past summer she was invited to, and attended, the prestigious Adidas Top 10 All-America Camp in which the top 200 scholastic players in America attend each year.

“Nicky comes from a very, very good AAU program (Minnesota Stars),†said Fernandez. “Her signing fits with Sara Lochmann graduating at the end of the season and gives us more depth at the three and four position. She is somebody that can come in and adds versatility for us and someone else that can really shoot the ball.â€Â

Both players will come to USF with quality credentials and respected reputations nationwide.

“Chi Chi is a good signing for USF,†said Bret McCormick, scouting director and managing partner of the All-Star Girls Report. “She is a local player who is an extremely athletic talent with a great upside. She will fit in well at USF with the type of players that they have and the style that the play.â€Â

“In addition, Nicki is an extremely fundamental player who can play either the inside or outside, even though she is ideally a wing player,†said McCormick. “She is a three-point shooter who really fills a role for USF.â€Â

“As a whole I think that USF has done a very good job with this year’s early signing class. Both Chi Chi and Nicki are the type of players that have the potential to step in right away and contribute immediately.â€Â

USF will close out the exhibition season on Sunday, November 16 at 2 p.m. when the Bulls face Miami Sun AAU in the Sun Dome. Admission is free.

The Bulls will open up the regular season on November 21 at Wagner College in Staten Island, NY, then head up the Hudson River to face West Point on November 23. USF will return to the Sun Dome – for their home opener – on November 25 to face Big East foe Miami at 7 p.m. in the Dodge Shootout.
