Pitt Officials Question USF Women's NCAA Bid

TAMPA - Apparently not everyone in the Big East Conference family was thrilled about the University of South Florida receiving its first women's NCAA Tournament bid Monday night.

Pittsburgh coach Agnus Berenato and a senior associate athletic director questioned why the Bulls received a bid, while the Panthers, who won both meetings against USF, did not.

"It's unusual, when you've beaten somebody twice in your conference, that South Florida would get in and we wouldn't," Carol Sprague, a Pitt senior associate AD who served five years on the NCAA women's selection committee, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

During Monday's NCAA selection show when the Panthers saw USF had received a bid, "several players groaned with dismay," the Post-Gazette reported. "They, like Berenato, were upset about losing a spot to 19-11 South Florida, which similarly finished with a 9-7 conference record."

USF coach Jose Fernandez had a message for the Panthers.

"If they're going to point fingers, they should have played someone in the nonconference," Fernandez said. "They also didn't beat [nationally ranked] DePaul and Notre Dame [like USF did]."

Pittsburgh defeated USF 66-64 on Jan. 4 and 60-58 on Feb. 11, but the Bulls finished with a better RPI (USF 43, Pitt 67) and played a tougher nonconference strength of schedule (USF 25, Pitt 99) according to CollegeRPI.com.

While USF loaded its nonconference schedule with nationally ranked North Carolina, LSU and Michigan State - UNC and LSU received No. 1 seeds Monday - Pittsburgh didn't schedule any nonconference ranked teams.

"If other schools question why they didn't make it and we did, they should schedule differently," Fernandez said. "We've proven we belong."

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
