Dead Man Walking. Perhaps, that’s too harsh and even a bit unfair, but, if you’re looking for my honest opinion, that’s exactly what University of South Florida athletic director Doug Woolard’s statement made Coach Robert McCullum. Woolard said Wednesday that McCullum, who has three years left on his contract, “will remain our men’s head basketball coach next season.â€Â

Some endorsement. Woolard said he felt he needed to issue a statement because The Tampa Tribune’s story Tuesday of boosters wanting to buy out McCullum and bring in former Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins “were a distraction to the team.†For the past few weeks, I have asked Woolard on several occasions to assess McCullum’s performance or the state of the program. I even said can you at least confirm he will return next year? Each time, Woolard politely said he evaluates each coach after their season is over. Well, at least, each coach he doesn’t feel like discussing.
