Does anyone have info on this kid? He has verbally committed to FAU. Did USF take a look at him? He has some nice size for a qb.

Recruiting road trip: Local prospects' itineraries full

By Jim Henry

Democrat Staff Writer

Trey Revell was up bright and early today.

The two-sport standout from Florida High is driving with family to visit Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Revell, a four-year starter at quarterback for the Seminoles, lists FAU, Arkansas State, the University of Louisiana at Monroe and Appalachian State among his favorites.

"They (FAU Owls) are saying I will be a perfect fit for their offense," said Revell, who threw for 1,800 yards and 12 touchdowns and also rushed for 400 yards this season.

"They run a similar offense to what we ran at Florida High, relying on single-back a lot."

Revell, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound senior, also would like to play baseball in college if given the opportunity. Revell, a catcher, hit .415 with five home runs for the Seminoles as a junior.

FAU, which went 2-8 in football last season, had two Big Bend players on its roster -- defensive lineman Kris Rush of Chiles and receiver Cortez Gent of Chiefland.

Lincoln High, as usual, has been a favorite stop of college coaches this recruiting season.

Although coaches were not permitted to visit recruits Monday through Thursday, Lincoln coach Kyle Rice had a number of coaches in his office last week, including Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen.

Trojans senior linebacker Craig Stevens has been targeted by many of the nation's top programs, including Friedgen's Terrapins.

Stevens and teammate Ashton Henderson departed this morning for their visit to UCLA. Stevens was scheduled to visit Clemson, but he pushed that trip to next weekend.

"It has been real hectic for him but Craig has been handling it well," Rice said this morning from his office. "All kids handle the recruiting process differently, but Craig is doing very well. He has a number of good choices, so he's going to be fine."

Stevens' favorites include UCLA, Alabama, Auburn, Maryland, and Clemson.

Also, Lincoln fullback Seddrick Holloway and cornerback Terry Thompson are visiting Kansas State this weekend. Holloway also has received offers from Kentucky, Illinois and Michigan State.

FSU, of course, also is spread across the country in search of recruits. However, one of the nation's top two-sport athletes is across state lines in Georgia.

Brent Brewer, a highly touted football receiver and baseball shortstop from Sandy Creek High in Tryone, Ga., lists the Seminoles, Mississippi and Georgia as his favorites. Brewer has indicated he wants to play football and baseball in college.

Brewer was ranked among the top 20 prospects at the 2005 Perfect Game National Showcase at Turner Field in Atlanta last summer. That list also included FSU baseball signees Cody Johnson of Lynn Haven and Max Sapp of Orlando. The trio also was named Aflac All-Americans.

Brewer also has said that FSU football recruit D'Vontrey Richardson, who is visiting FSU this weekend, is a close friend and the two would like to play baseball together. Brewer is scheduled to visit Mississippi this weekend, followed by Georgia (Jan. 20) and FSU (Jan. 27).

Brewer is one of the fastest prospects in the country. He was clocked 4.4 in the 40-yard dash at last spring's Nike Camp in Athens, Ga.

Rolle, Ponder go from recruited to recruiters

By Steve Ellis

and Jim Henry

DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITERS

Florida State coaches are through recruiting Myron Rolle and Christian Ponder - members of the 2006 recruiting class who enrolled at FSU last week.

But the two continue to recruit for their new team as prospects visit FSU in the final weeks before National Signing Day on Feb.1. Rolle said he talked up Florida State during the Army All-America Bowl on Jan.7. He said his roommate was C.J. Spiller, considered the top back in the nation after rushing for nearly 3,400 yards the past two seasons. Rolle also spoke with Andrew Smith, an offensive lineman from Birmingham who is may visit FSU before National Signing Day. Smith is considered the nation's top guard.

Ponder, who is from Colleyville, Texas, a Dallas suburb, has spoken with linebacker Michael Morgan from Dallas Skyline.

Morgan had 10 sacks and 103 tackles as a senior. Among the schools recruiting him are Oklahoma and Southern California. Morgan is scheduled to visit FSU the weekend of Jan.27, which is shaping up to be an important one for the Seminoles. Lake Butler Union County's Spiller, North Florida Christian's Ochuko Jenije and Marcus Sims are among those expected make their official visits that weekend.

Salters commits

North Florida Christian receiver Carlton Salters committed to the University of Arkansas on Tuesday.

Salters, a two-sport standout for the Eagles, selected the Razorbacks over Miami, Maryland and Wake Forest, Salters joins former Rickards High standout Michael Smith at Arkansas. Smith, a redshirt freshman running back, signed with the Razorbacks last February.

Salters, a three-year starter in the outfield, also wants to play baseball at Arkansas, according to NFC baseball coach Mike Posey. Salters cited the Razorbacks' coaching staff, the school's facilities and the opportunity to play in the Southeastern Conference as influences.

Good fit for Gee?

Madison County football coach Frankie Carroll accompanied running back Desmond Gee on his official visit to Middle Tennessee State last weekend. Carroll came away with a quick first impression.

''It's a place that really, really wants Desmond,'' Carroll said.

Gee, the Tallahassee Democrat's All-Big Bend Offensive Player of the Year after accounting for more than 2,200 all-purpose yards and 22 touchdowns this season, admits he also came away impressed by Middle Tennessee State.

''I liked all of it. The coaches, the atmosphere, the campus,'' Gee said. ''I really enjoyed it.''

The Blue Raiders have a new coach in Rick Stockstill, a former quarterback at Florida State from 1979-81. Stockstill made his way to Murfreesboro, Tenn., after spending the past two years as an assistant at South Carolina.

Carroll also said senior offensive lineman Kyle Fox, a first-team All-Big Bend selection with Gee, is scheduled to visit Bethune-Cookman College this weekend.

Quarterback sightings

Florida High quarterback Trey Revell has committed to Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Revell, who visited FAU last weekend, said he made his decision after watching film with FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger.

Schnellenberger played a video that highlighted former quarterbacks he has coached at the collegiate and professional levels, including Jim Kelly, Bernie Kosar, Vinny Testaverde, Browning Nagle and Jeff Brohm.

''It was awesome, it was crazy,'' Revell said. ''He turned on the video, we watched it and when he turned it off, he asked me if I wanted to be his next quarterback. It was neat.''

Wakulla High quarterback Tanner Jones, a first-team All-Big Bend selection, has committed to Troy University. Jones threw for more than 2,400 yards and 25 touchdowns this season for the War Eagles.

Heading West

Former Lincoln High cornerback Joe Manning, who signed with FSU in 2004 but was dismissed from the team in October by Seminoles coach Bobby Bowden, departed Monday for City College of San Francisco. He hopes to kick-start his career with the Rams.

Andre the giant

Recruiting fans can't seem to get enough of Andre Smith, ranked the nation's top offensive lineman by recruiting services and the No.2 overall recruit by Rivals.com.

Smith, from Birmingham, Ala., visited Alabama last weekend. He is scheduled to visit LSU this weekend, and will pick between Florida, Florida State, Auburn and Mississippi for his last visit.

What exactly is Smith, who also has visited Southern Cal and Miami, looking for in a school?

''I want to be in a great FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) program,'' Smith told Scout.com. ''I also want to major in Business Management, so I want to make sure the school has a good business program. And lastly, I want to be able to get along with the coaches. That is about it.''
