TAMPA (December 2, 2022) – The University of South Florida Bulls (3-6) matched a program record with 14 three-pointers on Friday night in an impressive 79-59 win over Charleston Southern at the Yuengling Center.

South Florida previously set the record of 14 triples in a game against Oral Roberts on December 7, 1991. The number is a new single-game record for three-points made by the Bulls inside the Yuengling Center.

Tyler Harris did all of his damage on Friday night in the first half with 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Russel Tchewa scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half as well and is shooting 76 percent over his last three games (16-21).

"We played extremely well tonight against an opponent and coach I have a lot of respect for," said head coach Brian Gregory. "That's a dangerous team who can shoot the ball and competes hard, and our guys were up to the challenge. We did a tremendous job defending their three-point shooters, and obviously had a great night from three on our offensive end. We challenged our guys the last two days at practice and I'm proud of how they responded. We played together and very unselfishly which led to a lot of good shots. This was a big step for us. We're playing some good basketball, but I know we can play even better."

The Bulls have won three of their last four games, scoring 70 or more points in each of those wins.

Sam Hines Jr. scored the first five USF points on Friday night, including an early three-pointer, which led to an 11-point effort overall.

Harris knocked down three of his first four three-point attempts. His fourth of the game capped an 11-point USF run at the 4:20 mark of the first half and his fifth came right before the break as the Bulls took a 39-24 advantage into the locker room.

A pair of free throws by Tchewa gave the Bulls a 20-point lead at the 16:12 mark of the second half which USF never relinquished. A three-pointer by Keyshawn Bryant with 8:09 left to play gave USF a 29-point advantage – it's largest of the night.

Ryan Conwell, Jamir Chaplin and Serrel Smith Jr. all took part in the three-point barrage with Jake Boggs hitting the 14th of the night late in the second half.

Notable

  • The offensive outburst came without one of the Bulls' leading scorers, Selton Miguel, missing the game with the flu.
  • Conwell dished out a career-high eight assists as USF totaled a season-best 22 assists.
  • Harris is shooting 44 percent (18-41) from downtown over his last five games.
  • USF improved to 41-14 when scoring 70 or more points under Gregory.
  • The Bulls held CSU to 2-of-18 shooting from beyond the arc (0-8 first half).

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (December 11, 2022) – The University of South Florida Bulls will return to game action after a nine-day layoff at Northern Iowa on Monday night. The matchup will be the first in program history between the two teams and South Florida's first-ever tilt in the state of Iowa.

The Panthers won the Missouri Valley Conference championship last season and earned an NIT postseason berth.

Monday's contest wraps up a four-game homestand for Northern Iowa. The Panthers have played three times since the Bulls last outing on December 2, falling twice in three chances at home.

On the flip side, USF has won three of its last four games, scoring 70 or more points in each of those victories. The Bulls matched a program record with 14 three-pointers last time out in a 79-59 triumph over Charleston Southern in Tampa on December 2.

Tyler Harris continues to lead the USF offense (14.8 ppg) and has found his three-point stroke. The senior guard is shooting 44 percent (18-41) from downtown over his last five games. Russel Tchewa is shooting 63 percent from the field this season and averaging 9.8 points to go along with a team-best 6.3 rebounds.

The Bulls are hoping to be back to full strength with the additions of Selton Miguel and DJ Patrick. Miguel missed the December 2nd game with the flu and Patrick has been out with an ankle injury since November 17th. Keyshawn Bryant and Jamir Chaplin each recently returner from their own injuries.

Sam Hines Jr. has started eight straight games and freshman Ryan Conwell has been in the starting lineup for four straight. Conwell dished out a career-best eight assists last time out.

USF returns to Tampa for a three-game homestand to wrap up non-conference play on Friday.
