USF game still has meaning for Mountaineers

By JIM BUTTA

MORGANTOWN-Hurricane Wilma kept West Virginia and the University of South Florida from meeting for the first time ever back on Oct. 22.

The University of Connecticut made sure on Saturday that this weekend's regular season finale wouldn't be for the Big East championship.

"We're obviously excited to win the outright Big East championship," said WVU head coach Rich Rodriguez. "Our young men have worked very hard all season to achieve this goal. We have two big games left to play, but this is quite an accomplishment for our program. Our guys believed the whole season that we could defend our Big East title, and we've played with that dedication and focus on the field. I'm very happy for our seniors and our whole football family."

Picked by the media covering the Big East to finish behind first-year member Louisville and 2004 co-champion Pittsburgh, the No. 12 Mountaineers have become one of the biggest surprises of the 2005 season.

WVU won its first outright title since the 1993 season-a season that saw the gold and blue finish No. 7 in the AP poll and play Florida in the then-called USF&G Sugar Bowl.

The site won't be New Orleans on Jan. 3, but it would appear the Mountaineers will be making their third appearance in the now-called Nokia Sugar Bowl.

Projections have WVU taking on the winner of the LSU-Georgia showdown in the SEC championship game.

ABC will announce all of the bowl matchups beginning at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4.

So with the Big East title and its BCS bid already locked away, do the Mountaineers go to Tampa on Saturday night and lay an egg?

Not if Rodriguez has anything to say about it.

"We're playing with confidence," said Rodriguez after watching the Mountaineers dismantle Pittsburgh, 45-13, in the 98th edition of the "Backyard Brawl".

"No one thought we'd be in this situation."

But, here they are and Rodriguez and the Mountaineers appear capable of handling every obstacle thrown in their way.

The game features the two top rushing programs in the Big East. West Virginia, after pounding the Panthers for 451 yards, lead the way with an average of 258.2 yards per game while USF is close behind at 215.1 ypg.

It also features three of the top rushers in the conference.

The Bulls' Andre Hall leads the league with a 118.1 yards per game norm while WVU's Steve Slaton and Pat White rank third and sixth, respectively.

Slaton, a freshman, is averaging 104.8 yards per game despite hardly seeing the playing field during the Mountaineers' first four contests while White, who rushed for a Big East and WVU record of 220 yards against Pitt, is averaging 69.8 yards per outing.

Who wins this game may very well come down to which defense is able to control the other team's running attack. WVU is ranked atop the Big East in rushing defense, allowing 94.3 yards per game, while the Bulls have been allowing 128.0 yards per outing.

The game will not be televised.

Pride.  Our House.  If it does not matter now, it never matters.
