I've just been informed that was last year's rule and doesn't apply this year.

Big East Tie Breaker Rules

This applies to the Big East Champion, but does it also apply to the Big East BCS berth representative?  Two different things?

Nevermind - it is for the berth.  Good news.

CONFERENCE CHAMPION & TIEBREAKER PROCEDURES

SEASON CHAMPION

The BIG EAST Champion is the team that finishes the regular season with the

highest winning percentage in conference games. If more than one team has the

same winning percentage, the tied teams are declared co-champions.

PROBATION:

A team on NCAA or Conference Probation, which includes a ban on bowl

participation, is not eligible for the Conference Championship.

BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES REPRESENTATIVE TIEBREAKER

PROCEDURE

In order to determine the Conference’s representative to the Bowl Championship

Series, the procedures listed below will be followed.

All references to “rankings” refer to the BCS Poll released after the regular season is

completed for all BIG EAST members.

TWO-WAY TIE

The winner of the head to head match-up will represent the BIG EAST in the

Bowl Championship Series

THREE-WAY TIE

A “MINI-CONFERENCE” IS CREATED AMONGST THE THREE TIED

TEAMS

Scenario I:

All three teams have either a 6-1 or 5-2 record and have each won one and

lost one against the other tied teams in the mini-conference. In this case, the

highest ranked team amongst the three earns the bid. If two of the three

teams are tied for the highest ranking, the bid is earned by the team winning

the head-to-head match up.

Scenario II:

All three teams have 5-2 records, and within the mini-conference, Team A is

2-0, Team B is 1-1, and Team C is 0-2. Team A earns bid regardless of

ranking.

FOUR-WAY TIE

A “MINI-CONFERENCE” IS CREATED AMONGST THE FOUR TIED

TEAMS

Scenario I:

In the mini-conference, Teams A & B are 2-1, and Teams C & D are 1-2.

The higher ranked of the 2-1 teams earns the bid. If the 2-1 teams tie for the

highest ranking, the bid goes to the team that won the head-to-head match

up.

Scenario II:

In the mini-conference, Team A is 3-0, Team B is 2-1, Team C is 1-2, and

Team D is 0-3. Team A earns bid regardless of ranking.

Where do you think USF will end in the rankings if they win out?

What if USF beats WVU, but both lay eggs on the way?

Don't believe scenario of Bulls denied BCS

By GREG AUMAN, Times Staff Writer

Published November 9, 2005

TAMPA - Relax, Bulls fans. If USF wins its next four games, the Bulls are headed to the BCS and its $14-million payout.

A West Virginia newspaper, the Charleston Gazette, reported Tuesday that even if USF wins out and beats the Mountaineers on Dec. 3 to share the Big East crown, West Virginia could be chosen for the conference's BCS berth - despite the head-to-head loss to the Bulls - should it finish more than five spots ahead of USF in the BCS rankings.

That sent a flurry of panic around USF message boards and prompted a few phone calls to the Big East headquarters, where associate commissioner John Paquette allayed any Bulls fears: The newspaper's scenario is incorrect, citing a fine-print loophole that is no longer in place.

If USF wins out, both teams would finish 6-1 in conference play, but the only tiebreaker in determining the BCS representative among the co-champs is head-to-head play.

USF coach Jim Leavitt isn't looking anywhere near that far ahead, focusing not even on Saturday's game with Syracuse but rather his next practice. Asked Tuesday if he'd thought about the fact that a win would be the 60th of his career, Leavitt dryly deadpanned: "Oh, yeah. Every moment."

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Freshman point guard Chris Howard made a big sacrifice this time last year, transferring from a Massachusetts prep school to Florida Prep Academy with the hopes of getting academically qualified, knowing he would not be able to play at his new school.

Another Bulls recruit has made a similar decision. Franklin Jones, a 6-foot-11, 275-pound center from Niagara Falls, N.Y., left the prestigious Mount Zion Academy in Durham, N.C., last week to return to Niagara Falls, where he started his high school career.

Jones was reported as a Bulls commitment last month by Rivalshoops.com, and Mount Zion coach Antonio Fozard said USF encouraged him to return to Niagara Falls shortly after he committed. He won't be eligible to play this year but will practice with his former teammates, focusing on graduating in the spring and joining the Bulls next fall.

MEN'S SOCCER: Fresh off a 4-1 home win Saturday against Rutgers, the Bulls play Providence on Friday in the Big East semifinals in Storrs, Conn.

USF is 1-5-1 under coach George Kiefer in temperatures below 50 degrees, and the forecast for Friday's semifinal is a high of 43, with a possibility of snow. The good news? If the Bulls advance to Sunday's final, the forecast is a high of 58. What's more, USF - ranked No. 16 by Soccer America - likely will host a match in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 18-19, and the Bulls have submitted bids to host in subsequent rounds.

Fans interested in watching Friday's 3:30 p.m. semifinal, televised on CSTV, can attend a watch party at the Clubhouse Sports Cafe on Fowler Avenue in Temple Terrace.

IN MEMORIUM: USF will host a campus memorial service at noon today in the Corral in the Sun Dome for former basketball player Bradley Mosley, who died Oct. 29 at age 22 after a yearlong battle with kidney cancer. The service is open to the public, with fans asked to enter the arena through Entry 1. To make donations, either to a fund for Mosley's family or to USF's general athletic scholarship fund, call (813) 974-2125.

THIS AND THAT: Jose Fernandez's women's basketball team opens its season tonight with an exhibition against EA Sports, and the Bulls will see a familiar face in point guard Anedra Gilmore. Gilmore, who finished her eligibility last season, is still taking classes this fall and can practice with the Bulls, as can classmate Alana Tanksley. Also on the EA Sports roster are former Florida star Tamia Williams and former Tennessee player and FHM model Brittany Jackson. ... Freshman forward Zaronn Cann of Brandon has been cleared for contact drills in practice but isn't close to being game-ready, said coach Robert McCullum, who wouldn't put a timetable on his Bulls debut. Junior forward McHugh Mattis is playing with a soft cast on his injured left wrist, but will play in Thursday's exhibition against Saint Leo. ... The new ESPN College Football Encyclopedia has USF losing its first-ever football game against Kentucky Wesleyan in 1997. For future reference, the Bulls actually pulled off the win, 80-3.
