Penalties thread: 'Yes it's bad' or 'No it's not'

I started keeping a running count of penalties a few years ago, '02 or '03. There was a big debate on the board if penalties were affecting the games and if USF was commiting more penalties than normal that season. I've just sort of kept up the tradition even though the penalty discussion has died down. I also keep track of  wins and losses, points scored, USF attendance numbers for home and away games and other things. My USF excel file is getting pretty big now. ;)

I think I've got stats that go back further than that.  I'll have to look them up if you want.  It'll be Monday or Tuesday before I can post anything.  You interested?

Sure! I only have penalty stats back to 2001. If you want to e-mail them, I can be reached at b5wars@gmail.com. Thanks!

not to be a smartass, but would anything before the stuff he has have any relevance to now?

anyway-- I'm sure K would want the stuff.

Well, I could do another I-A to I-AA comparison. :)

USF had 10 penalties for 81 yards and Syracuse had 6 for 51 yards.

Average so far for the season, including the Syracuse game.

8.75 for 70.75 yards per game for USF (up 1 yd per game)

7.25 for 60.13 yards per game for our opponents (down 1 yd per game)

USF is still doing well in the penalty department compared to last season.

Here are the last 4 seasons for comparison.

2004 - 9.6 for 82.5 yds per game

2003 - 9.4 for 83 yds per game

2002 - 11.6 for 98.7 yds per game (school record)

2001 - 10 for 88 yds per game

as long as the flags arent on stupid personal fouls where players lose their cool consistantly or false starts then im ok with the flags.

we need to play aggressive and tough.  but i hate those illegal shift or illegal formations.

USF had 18 penalties for 137 yards which ties last years OT game with TCU for number of penalties in a game. (As mentioned in another thread) The 137 yards of penalties is tied for 8th on the list of most yards penalized in a game. (17 for 137 @N. Texas 10/5/02.)

Cincinnati had 8 for 74 yards.

Average so far for the season, including the Cincinnati game.

9.78 for 78.11 yards per game for USF (up 1 penalty and 8 yds per game)

7.33 for 61.67 yards per game for our opponents (up 1 yd per game)

USF is comparable to the last two seasons in the penalty department.

Here are the last 4 seasons for comparison.

2004 - 9.6 for 82.5 yds per game

2003 - 9.4 for 83 yds per game

2002 - 11.6 for 98.7 yds per game (school record)

2001 - 10 for 88 yds per game

USF had 8 penalties for 62 yards.

UConn had 7 for 48 yards.

Average so far for the season, including the UConn game.

9.70 for 77.60 yards per game for USF (Down .5 yds per game)

7.30 for 60.30 yards per game for our opponents (Down 1.5 yds per game)

USF is comparable to the last two seasons in the penalty department.

Here are the last 4 seasons for comparison.

2004 - 9.6 for 82.5 yds per game

USF had 5 penalties for 35 yards.

W. Virginia had 5 for 33 yards.

Average for the regular season.

9.27 for 73.73 yards per game for USF (Down about .5 penalties and 4 yds per game from last week)

7.09 for 57.82 yards per game for our opponents (Down 2.5 yds per game)

Here are the last 5 seasons for comparison.

2005 - 9.3 for 73.7 yds per game (doesn't include bowl game)

2004 - 9.6 for 82.5 yds per game

2003 - 9.4 for 83 yds per game

2002 - 11.6 for 98.7 yds per game (school record)

2001 - 10 for 88 yds per game

So, the penalties per game are staying about the same, but the yards per game are trending down. I think this reflects less of the stupid personal foul penalties than in the past.

Anyone have the penalty stats for each game from '97 to '00? Would you be willing to either post them here or e-mail me at b5wars@gmail.com? I really want to do a comparison over all the years, rather than just I-A.
