Poinciana Guard Commits To Bulls

TAMPA - South Florida got a start on its 2006 basketball recruiting class, receiving a commitment from Kissimmee Poinciana guard Dante Curry, rated among the state's top 20 juniors by one recruiting service.

Curry (6-foot-4, 165 pounds) has started at Poinciana since his freshman year. As a junior, he averaged 19 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. He was a 2004 Nike All- American Camp participant and also was named to The Orlando Sentinel's All-Osceola County team the past two seasons.

``I like USF's style of play and I thought I fit in,'' said Curry, who had a career-high 42 points and 12 rebounds as a junior. ``It's the right school for me and the fact they are headed to the Big East was a real big factor.''

USF was the first school to offer a scholarship, but he also drew interest from Ole Miss, Georgia, Florida, Virginia Commonwealth and Old Dominion, his high school coach Jay Lunce said.

``Dante is the type of player that continues to improve and he enjoys working to improve,'' Lunce said. ``What South Florida liked about him is, with his talent, he has so much potential to grow.

``One of his best things is his knowledge of the game. He's not a shooter, he's a scorer.''

awesome... another TALL guard.  6'4"!

He's only a junior, so the 165 isn't a big deal, he'll fill that out a bit.

Guest BasketBull.

Well, if you can go to college a rock's throw from your home and be in the best conference in the land, it's a no-brainer -not to mention joining a quality program.

This is a positive for the program.

Also, the remark made by our AD regarding our basketball Coach as "the total package" or something to that effect, was nice to read and another positive.

I asked people about that in the thread about Woolard's Q&A.  That's a very interesting, and telling quote because Woolard is a basketball man.  He was a great hoops player, and coach in HS and college.  The man knows basketball, AND he knows how to build sound basketball programs as indicated by the success little ole St. Louis U had under his tenure.  To call McCullum "The Total Package" after what he's seen from other solid coaches tells me a lot because if any AD would know what the "The Total Package" looked like in college hoops it would be Woolard!  That has to be comforting even for the naysayers.

Sounds like a good pick up. I like the size of the guards that Coach McCullum is bringing in. Hopefully he finds a quality center or 2.

Actually BullGator I think that when Woolard called Mac the total package that included the "straight shooter" part of the package.  Mac said he was done with 2005 recruiting after signing Aris Williams and that the staff would concentrate on 2006.  I think he meant what he said, ie no Brumbaugh.  I think everyone needs to forget about Brumbaugh.  Sounds like Mac has.

Don't we have another scholarship to give this year? Could he maybe give it to Capko?

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
