First coach we've ever had hired away. So do we enter the new coach every 3-4 years, whether hired away or fired, cycle? Most teams are at some point in the cycle.

Our old friends at Pitt have been in the cycle for a long time. Their coaches since 1973:

Johnny Majors -4 years (Left for Tennessee his alma mater)

Jackie Sherril - 5 (Left for Texas A&M)

Foge Fazio -4 (Fired after 3 win and 5 win seasons)

Mike Gottfried- 4 (Fired due to adminsitrative issues regarding admissions standards)

Paul Hackett - 3 (Fired after 3 losing seasons)

Johnny Majors (second time) - 4 (retired)

Walt Harris- 8 (52-45 overall, left for Stanford)

Dave Wannstedt- 6 (resigned)

Mike Haywood- hired and fired within 3 weeks

Todd Graham- 1 (left for Arizona State)

Paul Chryst- 3 (Left for Wisconsin)

Narduzzi- in his second year

Uh the simple answer is yes. What is the average tenure of a CFB coach? 4 years? 5 years? Maybe less?

In addition to that, USF has been relegated to the minor leagues. This job will always be an opportunity for an up and comer, or a big name looking for a quick bounce back to get back into the SEC/ACC/Pac12.

In comparison to the Pitt cycle the Boise State cycle is much more successful, albeit not at a big conference.

Houston Nutt - 1 year (Went 5-6 left for Arkansas)

Dirk Koetter- 3 years (6-5, 10-3, 10-2 and left for Arizona State. Currently Bucs head coach)

Dan Hawkins - 5 years (Went 8-4, 12-1, 13-1, 11-1, 9-4 and then left for Colorado)

Chris Peterson- 8 years (92-12 record, 5 conference titles, 2 Fiesta Bowl wins and left for Washington)

Bryan Harsin- Finished his 3rd year (12-2, 9-4, 10-2)

Boise had a long history of winning before they moved up to D1. They also don't chase names but keep finding guys that fit their mold.

“This is not a broken football program by any means. It just needs to be united, to get everybody on the same page, share that same vision, and really to have that standard - best is the standard.”
