LOS CABOS, Mexico, FEB. 28, 2016  Aksel Olsen, Cristian DiMarco, Rigel Fernandes and Chase Koepka combined to go 10-under and give USF men’s golf the first-round lead at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate on Sunday.

USF (274) has a one-shot lead on Baylor in the Bulls’ first round since winning the SunTrust Gator Invitational on Feb. 21. No. 14 Cal and No. 11 Georgia are tied for third at 3-under (281) and No. 3 FSU is fifth at even-par (284).

Olsen and DiMarco both carded 3-under 68’s on the par-71, 6,928-yard course and trail overall leader Mario Carmono of Rice by two shots. Fernandes and Koepka each shot 2-under 69 and helped USF collect 21 total birdies.

"The guys are really confident. Aksel and Cristian continue to play well and are coming up big," head coach Steve Bradley said. "Rigel and Chase were very solid and consistent today."

Olsen birdied three of his final five holes to get to 3-under 68. The senior from Stavanger, Norway is playing in the second spot in the lineup after tying for eighth place in USF’s spring season-opening victory in Gainesville.

DiMarco tied for 19th at the Gator Invitational and tied for the tournament lead with five birdies during his first-round 68 on Sunday. The sophomore from Longwood, Fla., has shot in the 60’s in five of his 13 rounds this season.

Fernandes got to 2-under 69 by carding an eagle on the par-4 18th hole. The junior from Bradenton, Fla., was named conference player of the week after going 13-under in his title victory at the Gator Invitational.

Koepka helped boost USF ahead of the competition at the three-day event by collecting four birdies during his 2-under 69 round. Claudio Correa posted four of his five total birdies on the back nine to get down to 5-over 76.

"It's a solid start and we're looking forward to the next two days," Bradley said.

Monday’s second round begins at 11 a.m. (EST) and live scoring can be accessed HERE.

And they are doing this with one of their strongest players (Correa) not playing well in Day 1.  This is a great two year stretch of golf.  I really hope some of these kids make the tour and start a nice new tradition for USF.  A lot of tour players put their college team logo on their bag, so that would be some good representation if some of them make it happen.  I figure all of them have a chance to make this come true.

We had one PGA player last year, Oscar Fraustro, but he didn't remain there and is now playing on the Web.com tour.

I believe, Trey Valentine, just qualified for the PGA Latin America tour.

Another recent player, ( I forget who) may soon qualify for the PGA Canadian tour.

I have no doubt that some of the current team players will turn pro and work their way up the ladder to one day play on the PGA tour.

Hopefully, we are well on the way to building a long term top Men's Golf team.

USF shot -1 for the second round and is -11 for the tourney.

Other teams are still on the course, but USF will solidly be in 2nd place, behind Georgia who is shooting a super low round.

At the moment, Aksel is the individual leader but GA is still firmly in the lead at -20 (we're -14). Claudio is having a rough outing.

Is this tournament being played in GA?  Never mind... just read... Mexico.....

Yeah, but I assume that placing second will still be a great accomplishment considering there are quite a few teams ranked above us that we are going to beat (Other than #11 Georgia)

Exactly.

There are a few different golf rankings and they all have their own way of computing them.

But, in all of them finishing ahead of a number of top 25 teams, like we have done in this tourney, will move us up quite a bit.
