  1. that's freaking hilarious. Katie used to play on the course by my parents' house a lot. She grew up about 15 minutes from me.
  2. I saw that today as well, and having worked in higher education for seven years now, and seen several schools boost enrollments by similar margins, I can cast a great deal of doubt. If enrollment increases by that much, or even half as much, it is a necessity that academic standards for admission will fall.
  3. He'd better not be planning a move to New Jersey anytime soon. All the media sources up there are reporting it's Ohio's own Tim O'Shea who will get the job... though I have no idea why they'd want him.
  4. Gregory has definitely moved to defensive back. His mother told me this afternoon. Also met Greg, who seems like a great guy. They saw me in some Ohio gear and called me over.
  5. the offensive foul call at the end of Rutgers-Dartmouth was a **** tragedy
  6. Few "mid-majors" are. In fact, the average mid-major is as big or bigger than the Dukes, Wake Forests, and Notre Dames of the world.
  7. Are standardized tests culturally biased? Absolutely. Are they amazingly valid and reliable in predicting whether or not a student will graduate? Absolutely. Draw your own conclusions about the correlation, but it's about a factor of +0.9 Pearson's r if I remember correctly.
  8. considering how many athletes i have in that class, exactly !
  9. Good, I need a positive outlook as I sit down to grade 37 papers written by USF students.
  10. Every time I read a post like Herman_Momart's, I think a little less of USF as an institution of higher learning, because if we produce people that short-sighted and unintelligent, we must not be that great of a school. And that makes me sad, because I know we're a **** good school.
  11. We all should be GMU fans because their university really mirrors our own. Started in the 50s as an alternative to the other state schools, servicing a major city, commuter-school in nature, diverse, and a growing (in GMU's case, huge) research institution. ...except somehow they're still in the CAA and we're in the Big East, a fact that still, today, blows my mind.
  12. I dunno, Larranaga's departure from BGSU and hiring at GMU was a step down, really, at the time.
  13. Like it or not, standardized tests are amazingly valid and reliable metrics for projecting college graduation rates. If you can't meet the NCAA's low test score requirements, it's extremely unlikely you'll graduate. Some do, but most don't. Since APR is tied to graduation rates, it's in the conference's best interest to take steps necessary to increase future graduation rates... this is one of those steps.
  14. That article is the stupidest thing ever. Football is a revenue sport, and two I-A teams that trade I-AA opponents to face each other lose that much in home game revenue (well, one of them does, at least). Now, if all I-A matchups were home-and-home guarantees, that'd be one thing. But they're not. And sometimes, even when they are, they get canceled (see Ohio canceling its home game vs. Virginia Tech to pick up an away game at Missouri).
  15. BS: Journalism @ the E.W. Scripps School, Ohio University MA: comm (interpersonal focus) @ Eastern Michigan Ph.D: comm (cultural studies/autoethnography focus) @ USF
  16. It wasn't one of our better performances. We turned the ball over a LOT, including at the end of the game. We missed free throws. Etc. It was a great season, I'm totally psyched for next year.
  17. Bobcat99's head asplode. This was, I believe, the first head-to-head matchup of Ohio and USF since I became a student here a year and a half ago.
  18. Seton Hall - 18-11, #58 RPI, #75 Pythag, #59 Sagarin Missouri St - 20-8, #21 RPI, #30 Pythag, #25 Sagarin All you need to know NCAA is a scam
  19. Last night was all kinds of awesome. What a great way to send the seniors out. Despite a much-smaller-than-wednesday crowd, the student section was rocking. I, uh, well, they need to make the seats in the student section more suitable for banging on. There's one in row six that, um, is cracked now. I had nothing to do with it. *snicker* All in all, my day started in Dunedin for the Phils at Jays, followed by a few hours at Tampa Bay Downs, then to the Sun Dome for a Bulls win, then down to Old Chicago in Brandon for the UNC-Duke game. Sports days don't get much better than that.
  20. OU has a massive athletic dept sale every two years at the Spring Game. Pretty much every football uniform, basketball warmup, whatever you want, at cutrate prices.
  21. Don't forget Aris Williams. He's a monster beneath that mild-mannered exterior.
  22. Wasn't it awesome that we hit a big 3 every time those jackass UConn fans started their chants? They never had a chance to impact the game... love it. Just like when Yankees fans packed the Trop and we stomped on them... good times.
  23. We outperformed the (now #1) team in teh country in nearly every category but rebounding. Motivating a very weak team (that had to rely on one of the worst players in DI history, Capko) to perform to that level is evidence that Mac can get his players up. What, you think your hero Chuggy Bear takes that same group of players and beats UConn? Get real. Wooden himself wouldn't have been any closer against UConn with the team we have than Mac was tonight. And if you're going to blame Mac for guys dying of cancer, et cetera, well, you're proving to be the irrational jerks you are. Tonight was a phenomenally exciting game. What more do you want? A win? Against the best team in the country, in our first year in the conference? Get real.
  24. I happen to have two of his recruits in class right now and they're fantastic students and human beings.
  25. It makes a big difference, legally. It limits the University's liability -- and this has come up in several lawsuits regarding First Amendment rights at the Sun Dome.
