Interesting quote that, in context, explains everything...

Yet not all colleges provide coverage as extensive as Louisville’s, and individual athletes are in no position to negotiate. Though the NCAA Tournament generates more than $770 million annually in television rights fees, its labor force continues to perform pretty much pro bono. The system has always been exploitive, but the checks carry a lot more digits now.

There's a study out there that offered people a choice. A... you can take this job at 100,000/ year, or B... you can take it at 50,000/ year.

Of course, everyone chooses A, right?

Wrong.

The catch is that if you choose A, everyone else taking the job gets 200K while you get 100K. But if you choose B, you get 50K while everyone else gets 25K

A majority chose B.

The real issue isn't whether the system is exploitative - it ALWAYS has been.

The real issue is that the $ signs became $$$$$ signs.

When the size of the pot is the issue, it's all about "they got more than I did" rather than "I got a free education"

The day they start paying college athletes is the day I stop watching college athletics
