USF Football Schedule Complete; Bulls Spring Game to be Televised on Brighthouse Networks' Catch 47

(March 4, 2005) The University of South Florida football team will debut in the BIG EAST with a September 24 home game against Louisville as part of a final schedule released today. The Louisville game follows previously announced games at Penn State (September 3) and at home against Florida A&M (September 10) and Central Florida (September 17) and precedes a first-ever match-up with Miami (October 1) in the Orange Bowl.

USF also announced today that the Spring Football Game will be played April 16 at 7 p.m. in Raymond James Stadium and it will be televised by Brighthouse Networks’ Catch 47 in the Tampa Bay market.

With Penn State, Miami and a game at Pittsburgh (October 15), USF will face three opponents that have combined for eight national championships, all in the first six games of the season.

In addition to Louisville, USF will have BIG EAST home games against West Virginia (October 22) and Cincinnati (November 19). In addition to the Pittsburgh game, USF’s BIG EAST road schedule includes Rutgers (November 5), Syracuse (November 12) and Connecticut (November 26).

Among USF’s 11 opponents in 2005, seven played in Bowl Games, including Louisville (Liberty), Miami (Peach), Pittsburgh (Fiesta), West Virginia (Gator), Syracuse (Champs Sports), Cincinnati (Fort Worth) and Connecticut (Motor City).

“As we enter the Big East Conference, we are pleased to assemble he most competitive schedule to date for our fans,†says USF director of athletics Doug Woolard. “This will be a truly exciting season for our fans to follow each and every week. This is an outstanding blend of regional and national opponents.â€Â

USF played its first season of football in 1997 and has rapidly moved from I-AA to Conference USA in 2003 and 2004 and now the BIG EAST. The Bulls are 55-33 in their first eight seasons of competition, all under head coach Jim Leavitt.

The televised spring game is part of an ongoing partnership between USF and Brighthouse Networks. Brighthouse has produced and aired a series of USF women’s basketball games this season. The Brighthouse sponsorship of the spring football game will include the first live television airing of the event.

“We are building a great relationship with Brighthouse and we hope to have more USF programming on Catch 47 in the coming yearsâ€Â, said USF Athletic Director Doug Woolard. “The airing of the spring football game is another positive step forwardâ€Â.

“We’re looking forward to our involvement with this eventâ€Â, said Catch 47 station manager Robert Evans. “It will continue to strengthen the ties between USF and Brighthouse Networks.â€Â

Also new for the spring game this year will be the 7:00 pm start time. “We have been working on several areas of this event to create a “fall football atmosphere†that we all can enjoy in the spring. This year’s game will feature pre-game tailgating and live music. We are taking our in-game experience to a new level in 2005, and you will get a sneak preview of that on April 16thâ€Â, USF Associate Athletics Director Tom Veit said.

This year’s spring game will also be marked by the appearance of Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese. Tranghese and a delegation from the conference will be making their first official visit to Tampa for the game.

Admission to the spring game will be free for season ticket holders and students, and $5 for the general public. Tickets can be picked up at the Athletics Ticket Office, entry 3 of the Sun Dome, Monday-Friday 9:00AM-6:00PM, or at Raymond James Stadium on game day beginning at 1:00 PM.

Season tickets for 2005 are currently on sale, starting as low as $99. For more information, fans may call 1-800-GoBulls.

This is awesome.  A night game, locally televised and the BE folks there.  Marketing must grab this now and promote it as not only the game and select-a-seat night but a big party/celebration of entering the BE.  I for one would suggest free beer (yeah right) and the first 5,000 fans get some USF logo item as a Brighthouse give away (ralley towel, hat, cheap t shirt, whatever).

There would probably be a much larger turnout if the Athletic Department mailed a flyer and tickets for the spring game to all season ticket holders NOW.
