How the hell do you win in sailing? Is it a time thing, from Point A to Point B? Similar to rowing or dragon boat racing?

We live in Tampa, Florida and the beach is right down the street. We should be above average.

How the hell do you win in sailing? Is it a time thing, from Point A to Point B? Similar to rowing or dragon boat racing?

Collegiate sailing places double-handed (2 person - skipper and crew) dinghys sailing simultaneously against eachother on a triangular course or variant there of. All boats start at the same time and place and finish at the same place.

It is essentially a tactical sport where awareness and ability to take advantage of wind shifts gives you the edge. Of course it also helps most of the time if you're skipper/crew combo are light (much like a jockey on a horse). Each school has two teams (A and B ). Your finishing place is your score and lowest aggregate score wins.

Sailing has always been dominated by schools from the Northeast.
