USF Bulls' season ticket count close to 2009 total

By Greg Auman, Times Staff Writer

As the USF Bulls prepare for the fourth of seven home games in the 2010 season, USF's season ticket count has wrapped up at 23,494, down just 2.9 percent from last year's final number of 24,185.

That's still well below the program's all-time high of 27,879 season tickets back in 2008, but it's not nearly as dramatic a dropoff as the Bulls endured a year ago. USF has averaged an announced crowd of 39,637 in its first three home games, which is on par from the home average at this time last season, which was 39,579.

The challenge for USF will be finding enough success on the field to build larger crowds for the final three games (against Rutgers, Pittsburgh and Connecticut). A year ago, the Bulls announced a crowd of 63,976 to see an undefeated USF face No. 8 Cincinnati in October, then had an announced 66,469 to see the Bulls play host to Miami in November. The Bulls aren't likely to face another ranked team at home this season.

How big a crowd will Syracuse bring for Saturday's Big East opener? It's hard to say based on history - the 2006 Syracuse game in Tampa drew just 29,694, USF's second-smallest attendance for a home Big East game; the 2008 game, when USF was ranked No. 19 and 5-1 overall, drew an announced 51,384.

If Syracuse is bringing a strong following of fans after the team's 3-1 start, it certainly isn't through the team's official allotment. The Orange were allotted 3,000 tickets beyond the 400 that are given complimentary by Big East policy, and as of Friday afternoon, Syracuse had purchased just 319 of those 3,000 seats, according to USF. Saturday is USF's Homecoming game for 2010, which should help attendance as well.

On the upside...  Outselling the Rays??  ;D

And I'm sure their drop-off is a lot less than the Bucs who can't even get enough butts in the seats to avoid blackouts!

I'd say given the current state of the economy in these parts, their numbers all pretty decent.  8-)

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

Last I checked the scoreboard doesn't have a spot for current bank balance on it.
