USF to represent USA at Brazil tournament

By SCOTT CARTER | The Tampa Tribune

USF will stand for USA this summer.

The University of South Florida men's basketball team will travel to Brazil in August to compete in the inaugural Pan American University Championships, representing the United States in the eight-team tournament.

"It's an honor for our basketball program to represent the United States in this international event,'' USF coach Stan Heath said Monday in a statement. "This also is a great opportunity for our team to compete against some of the best players in the world and prepare our team for the upcoming season.''

The event is scheduled Aug. 8-15 in Salvador, Brazil, located in the Northeastern part of the country. The Bulls will take 12 players on the trip and wear USA uniforms, playing five games under international rules.

Host Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, U.S. Virgin Islands, Netherlands Antilles and Uruguay have accepted invitations, with one spot remaining open.

The event was organized by the University Sports Federation, which also coordinates the summer and winter World University Games.

According to NCAA rules, a school is allowed to take one international summer trip every four years. USF finished 20-13 last season, earning an NIT berth for its first postseason trip in eight years.

This is  a great honor  for student athletes.  It really seems like these trips should be a huge draw to some of these high school kids.  Any news if CSH knew about this trip prior to us losing Ox?

The Bulls will take 12 players on the trip and wear USA uniforms,

If I recall correctly, the last time we did one of these international summer trips we couldn't take any incoming players. My calculations show only 7 rostered players right now:

Anderson

Burwell

Crater

Famous

Fitzpatrick

Gilchrist

Noriega

Where do the other 5 come in or did I remember wrong about taking incoming players?

Newcomers can play now so long as they've completed a 3-hour summer class beforehand.
