TAMPA - The most anticipated Pro Day in University of South Florida football history drew about 50 NFL scouts to campus Tuesday afternoon, including head coaches Lovie Smith of the Chicago Bears, Tom Coughlin of the New York Giants and Marvin Lewis of the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were represented by pro scouting director Doug Williams.

There was plenty to see.

Led by defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, as many as seven members of the 2009 Bulls team likely will be chosen during the NFL Draft, which spans seven rounds on April 22-24. Other USF players, including quarterback Matt Grothe, hoped to catch the eye of an NFL scout.

Several undrafted players eventually will sign with NFL teams as free agents.

Grothe, whose senior season ended prematurely when he tore the ACL in his left knee in a Sept. 19 game against Charleston Southern, hopes to revive his football career either in the NFL or the CFL.

Players were measured, weighed and tested for their vertical jump and bench press before taking the field for workouts. Grothe was listed at 5-foot-11 (and six-tenths), 207 pounds and Pierre-Paul came in 6-5, 266. Safety Nate Allen's vertical jump was measured at 34.5 inches, but he bench pressed 225 pounds just 12 times.

Grothe had a 32 inch vertical jump and ran the 40 in 4.82 seconds.

Receiver Carlton Mitchell was timed in 4.42 seconds on his first attempt at the 40-yard dash, while cornerback Jerome Murphy was clocked in 4.51 seconds on his only attempt.

Allen was unable to run a timed 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine because of a pulled quadricep muscle in his left leg and did not run for scouts Tuesday because the same injury still was lingering.

Lovie Smith checks out South Florida's Pro Day

March 30, 2010 3:37 PM

By Vaughn McClure

Lovie Smith soaked in some sun and checked out some prospects Tuesday.

The Bears coach was at the University of South Florida's Pro Day along with several other head coaches, as the Tampa Tribune points out. The top draw at the event was defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, although the Bears' top draft priority isn't a defensive end, with Julius Peppers now in the fold.

But the Bears do need immediate help at safety and cornerback, and South Florida has two prospects in safety Nate Allen and cornerback Jerome Murphy. Allen (6-foot-1, 207 pounds) is projected as a second-rounder while Murphy (6-foot, 196) could go in the third or fourth round. Murphy ran a 4.51 in the 40.

The Bears don't pick until the third round after trading draft picks away to Denver and Tampa Bay for Jay Cutler and Gaines Adams. The Bears did not receive another second-round draft pick as compensation after Adams passed away.

Smith attending South Florida's pro day could mean nothing, or if could mean a lot. When he visited Arkansas in 2007, he had lunch with Razorbacks star Darren McFadden then selected two of McFadden's teammates: defensive tackle Marcus Harrison (third round) and receiver Marcus Monk (seventh).

Receiver Carlton Mitchell is another South Florida product worth keeping an eye on. The 6-3, 215-pounder ran the 40 in 4.42 seconds.

Who helped themselves most at USF Pro Day? Hard to argue with WR Carlton Mitchell, timed as low as 4.40 -- solid for 6-3, 213-pound junior.

Good luck Carlton, but you probably won't need any now.  ;)

Allen said today he might try to set up a private workout to run the 40. He has private workouts in the next two days with the Cowboys and Chiefs.
